8. Charging the drive battery

Observe chapters 6 and 7. Numerous hazards are associated with improper handling of the drive battery
and the battery charger.
Never leave the battery to charge unsupervised.
Charging partially discharged NiMH batteries does not pose any problems, a prior discharge is not re-
quired. Ensure, however, that the battery is regularly discharged and then fully charged again in order for it
to achieve its full performance.
The battery must be allowed to cool to room temperature after driving the vehicle before charging. The
same applies after charging. Use the battery in the vehicle only when it has cooled sufficiently.
The battery charger and the battery become hot during the charging process. Never cover the battery
charger or the battery. Do not expose the battery charger or battery to extremely high/low temperatures or
direct sunlight.
The supplied NiMH battery is supplied uncharged and must be charged. Before the battery can deliver its
maximum power, several complete discharge and charge cycles are required.
Charge the battery regularly (approx. once every 2 - 3 months) to prevent it from undergoing deep dis-
charge. Deep discharge will render the battery unusable!
To charge the NiMH drive battery, a USB battery charger is supplied. Use a USB power adapter or USB cigarette light-
er (not included) to power the USB battery charger. This must be able to deliver an output current of at least 500 mA.
When connected to a computer, ensure that the USB port can supply a current of at least 500 mA (do not
use a USB hub with its own power supply). The operating system does not recognise any new hardware
when the USB battery charger is connected.
Proceed as follows:
• Insert the USB plug on the USB battery charger into the USB power supply (e.g. a USB power adapter).
• Insert the small connector on the drive battery into the corresponding socket on the USB battery charger. Ensure
that the connector and socket are oriented correctly, do not use any force when connecting.
• The charging process will begin provided that the battery is not defective (high impedance/disconnected) and
that the battery charger is connected to a power supply. The red LED indicator on the battery charger lights up to
indicate that the battery is charging.
LED on: Battery is charging
LED off: The battery is full/fully charged
• When the charging process is complete, remove the drive battery from the battery charger. The charging process
to charge a fully depleted drive battery can last up to 30 minutes.
• Disconnect the USB battery charger from the voltage/power supply.
