Modern NiCd accumulators designed for boost charge allow charging rates of up
to 4C, however, here too, it is always necessary to observe the manufacturer's
specifications. Depending on NiCd accumulator type and manufacturer, the
patented reflex charging even permits a charge with up to 5C. The charging time
is reduced to a few minutes accordingly.
The memory effect (chemical memory) occurs in the accumulator with low
charging and discharging currents, long storage time without use and frequent
recharging in a partially discharged condition with conventional charging
technology.
The chemically-active substances, which are initially fine grained, form large
crystals that lead to a high increase of internal resistance. Consequently, the
accumulator is no longer capable of delivering or being charged with higher
currents.
For this reason, the reflex procedure uses higher charging currents, and
especially the very high discharging current impulses prevent the formation of
large crystals. The internal resistance of the accumulator stays low, considerably
less heat is generated during charging and the memory effect does not occur at
all.
Over time, accumulators discharge themselves even without being connected to a
consumer. This property is called natural self-discharge.
