2.9 Mode of action in treatment of the upper
airways
Nebuliser treatment of acute and chronic inflammations of the
paranasal sinuses (sinusitis) using inhaled medications (saline
solutions and/or drugs) is subject to particular requirements.
The aim is to apply the active agent through the ostia (connec-
tions between the main nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses)
directly to its site of action, the nasal sinuses. To achieve this
aim, the medical device creates a pulsating mist ("aerosol").
The pulsation helps the active agent to pass through the ostia
and into the paranasal sinuses much more effectively. The ad-
vantage of such topical (local) therapy over oral, systemic ap-
plication (e.g., in tablet form) is that doses can be smaller.
Thus it can be expected that there is a reduction in the occur-
rence of side effects. It also moistens the mucous membranes
of the nose.

TREATMENT

3.1 Preparing the treatment

Setting up the compressor

Check the compressor housing, the power cord and the power
plug for damage every time before use. Make sure that the
local supply voltage complies with the voltage data marked on
the compressor identification label. Only use the compressor if
all components are intact. The compressor must not be oper-
ated if the device or the power cord is damaged, or if damage
is suspected (e.g., after it has fallen or if there is a smell of
burning plastic).
1) Aerosol: Small particles of solid, liquid or mixed composition suspended in
gases or air.
