7.13 AF-BEAM (AF auxiliary light)

If the AF metering system of a digital AF reflex camera, e.g. Canon EOS, is
unable to focus on account of insufficient ambient lighting, the camera activates
the AF auxiliary light that is built into the flash unit. This projects a striped pat-
tern onto the subject which the camera can then use to focus on.
If the striped pattern is not wanted, the additional 'AF-BEAM' function in the
Select menu of flash unit "58 AF-1C digital" allows the AF auxiliary light of the
flash unit to be deactivated. This is done by selecting option AF-BEAM in the
Select menu and setting it to OFF.
Once the setting has been saved, the deactivated AF beam function is indicated
by a crossed-out AF icon in the display.
When the AF-BEAM function is deactivated, it is possible that the camera
can no longer focus in the dark.

8. Motor Zoom Reflector

The zoom position of the main reflector can be adjusted for focal lengths of at
least 24 mm (35 mm format). For lenses with focal lengths of 18 mm or more,
but-
the integrated wide-angle diffuser
.
The following zoom positions are available:
24 mm - 28 mm - 35 mm - 50 mm - 70 mm - 85 mm - 105 mm (corresponding
to 35 mm format)
When using the wide-angle diffuser
cally moved to the 24 mm position! Because of the wide-angle diffuser,
18 mm appears on the display (see 9).
Automatic zoom adjustment
This causes the zoom position of the main mirror
lens focal length. "AZoom" and the mirror position will then appear on the flash
unit's display panel.
Manual zoom adjustment
If the camera does not transfer the parameters for the lens focal length or for the
zoom position, the zoom position of the flash reflector has to be adjusted by
hand. "MZoom" will then appear in the LC display. See also 6.3.
If you use a zoom-lens and do not necessarily need the full guide number
and maximum flash range of the flash unit you can leave the zoom reflec-
tor at the position for the shortest focal length of the zoom lens. This will
provide full light coverage of the picture and eliminate the need to conti-
nually adjust it to the focal length of the lens.
Example:
You use a zoom lens with a focal length range of 35 mm to 105 mm. In this
case, set the position of the main reflector
can be positioned over the main reflector
the main reflector
is automati-
to automatically adjust to the
to 35 mm!
