5. ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONS

1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the KEF PSW powered
subwoofer. We are confident that your PSW4000 or
PSW5000 will provide reliable, high performance sound
for many years to come.
The PSW4000 and PSW5000 subwoofers offer
high-end performance in both music and home cinema
installations and can be used simultaneously for both
due to the dedicated LFE input.
High level or line level inputs are available to allow
flexibility in set-ups and in addition, line level
connections are possible as either single ended (phono)
or balanced (XLR). KEF recommend the use of line
level connections where possible.
For ease of use and installation the subwoofers are
equipped with an RF remote control, allowing for easy
adjustment of subwoofer level, cut off frequency and
phase from your listening position.
Please read this manual fully before installing your
powered subwoofer.
2. Unpacking
KEF strongly recommend that you do not attempt to
unpack or move your PSW4000 or PSW5000
single-handed. These are large and heavy products so
recruit the assistance of another adult - or consult your
dealer for assistance.
Follow the unpacking procedure shown in Fig.1 p4.
Make sure the feet are correctly fitted before the
subwoofer is lifted to the correct position.
If the subwoofer is to be used on delicate wooden
flooring please use the supplied protective cups which
fit under the feet.
3. Controls and sockets

1. Voltage selector
Please ensure the correct voltage is selected for the
country of use.
2. Mains power on/off switch (vacation switch)
Please ensure all connections are made before the
appliance is turned on.

6. Auto/manual switch
With the auto position selected the subwoofer will
automatically switch to standby mode if there is no
input signal detected for greater than 160 minutes.

The subwoofer is automatically taken out of standby
when an input signal is detected. With the manual
position selected the subwoofer standby function is
controlled via the remote hand set.
7. Speaker input/High level input
Used when the subwoofer is to be driven from the
output of the main speaker power amplifier.
8. Line level inputs
KEF recommend the use of line level connections
where possible.
Used to connect the subwoofer to the line level
signal from a preamplifier or the dedicated LFE
(Low Frequency Effects) output from a surround
sound processor. Please note that single ended
(phono) or balanced (XLR) connections are
available however they must not be used
simultaneously. If only one set of line outputs is
available on your pre amplifier use Y connectors to
split the L and R signals between power amplifier
and subwoofer.
9. Variable Low-pass filter roll off rate
Selects the roll off rate of the subwoofer low-pass
filter at either 12dB per octave (2nd order) or 24dB
per octave (4th order). If the subwoofer is to be used
for low frequency extension to your main speakers
then the low-pass filter slope needs to be set
according to the partnering speakers. For bass reflex
speakers the slope should be set to 24dB/octave
and for closed box speakers the slope should be set
to 12dB/octave.
10.Phase control
Used to adjust the acoustic phase of the subwoofer
relative to the main speakers.
11. Crossover frequency control
Used to adjust the internal low-pass crossover filter
of the subwoofer.
12.Level control
Used to set the level of the subwoofer relative to the
main speakers output.
13.Music/cinema switch
Used for added impact when watching movies.

1. Standby/on button.
Used to put the subwoofer in standby or to bring it
out of standby. (see Auto/Manual switch).
2. Level control
Used to set the output level of the subwoofer relative
to the main speakers.
3. Crossover frequency control
Used to adjust the internal low-pass crossover filter
of the subwoofer.
