Packing and inspection

The PENTAGON must be opened, aired and re-packed at least once every
!
12 months.
The re-pack interval should be shorter if the parachute is exposed to extreme
conditions such as moisture, sand, water, intensive use in winter or an unfavour-
able combination of outer container and deployment bag.
Every 24 months (2 years), or after a deployment over ground or water, the para-
chute must be periodically inspected by a qualified parachute service centre. This
includes the following visual inspection of all components for damage and wear:
• Canopy inspection
Hang the parachute by the apex in a room with a high ceiling so that the stretched
gores just touch the floor. Go inside the canopy. Ask a second person to stretch
each gore (holding the suspension line attachment points on the skirt) between
you and a light source, for example a window. Inspect the entire gore for tears,
marks, discolouration, burns, abrasions or defective stitching.
• Suspension line inspection
Secure the bridle and feel along the suspension lines. Check the entire length of
line for damage or abrasions. Make sure all all lines are stitched correctly.
• Bridle inspection
Check the bridle for any possible damage or abrasions. Pay particular attention
to inner or outer damage at both ends. Document all checks and repairs to the
parachute in an appropriate manner. All re-packs and inspections must be noted
in your log book/parachute manual.
What to do if the reserve is
damaged
If any damage is discovered during the inspection of the parachute, it must be sent
to the manufacturer for evaluation and repair. This also applies to damage where
the effect on the airworthiness cannot be clearly determined.

Repairs

Repairs may only be performed by the manufacturer. This ensures that only the
correct materials and repair techniques are used.
