Safety Considerations

The following safety considerations related to defibrillation, implantable cardiac devices, and NBP
cuff usage are applicable to the HeartStart Intrepid.
WARNINGS: The energy from cumulative shocks may harm the patient. Follow your organization's protocol for
selecting defibrillation energy and delivering multiple shocks.
Defibrillation therapy may cause myocardial injury to the patients.
Ensure adhesive pads on the patient are at least 8 cm (3 inches) away from an implantable cardiac
device (ICD). If necessary, use an alternative pad position, such as anterior-lateral or
posterior-anterior. Failure to do so may damage the ICD during defibrillation.
Defibrillation therapy may affect the performance of a patient's implantable cardiac device (ICD).
Refer to the ICD manufacturer's guidelines.
CPR may cause discomfort, bruising, or tenderness even when performed properly. In rare cases,
skin laceration or soft tissue injuries may also occur.
CAUTIONS: Perform CPR as recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European
Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines, in conjunction with your organization's protocol.
Usage of a blood pressure cuff for noninvasive blood pressure (NBP) monitoring may cause minor
skin irritation or bruising.
NOTES: Defibrillation therapy may cause minor skin burns on the patient underneath the applied electrodes
or paddles.
Electrodes, multifunction electrode pads, and external paddles may cause skin irritation on the
patient.
Defibrillation therapy may cause patient discomfort or muscle contractions.
