Tone control

The receiver is equipped with a volume-dependent tone
control (LOUDNESS). It is designed to compensate for
the ear's varying sensitivity to frequency relative to
volume. This is due to physiological characteristics of the
human ear.
At very high volume the loudness circuit has no effect at
all. As volume is reduced its effect increases.
The loudness circuit is switched on or off by pressing the
 button.
The red LED above the button glows when LOUDN is
switched on.
The FLAT function by-passes the receiver's tone control
section, and thus switches the tone controls out of
circuit. The frequency response is then absolutely linear
(flat).
The FLAT mode is switched on by pressing the FLAT
button.
The red LED above the button glows when the FLAT
mode is switched on.
Note:
When the receiver is switched to FLAT mode it is not

The LOUDNESS function is also available in FLAT
mode.

To compensate for the effects on reproduction quality of
imperfections in the auditioning room or unfavourable
loudspeaker locations, the receiver is fitted with an
active, infinitely variable tone control system.
The tone controls are designed to affect low frequencies
below 300 Hz (BASS) and high frequencies above
4000 Hz (TREBLE) only, so that there is no danger of
colouring the sound in the essential mid-range region.
When the tone controls are in the central position the
frequency response is linear.
If the controls are rotated clockwise then the bass or
treble is raised.
Turn them counter-clockwise and the bass or treble falls
off.

Volume control and balance

The 
 control is used to set the balance between
the left-hand and right-hand channels, e. g. if the speak-
ers are not set up symmetrically.
To avoid any danger that the balance control might affect
sound
quality
the
+0.6 dB / -8 dB.
When the knob is at centre the gain of both channels is
equal.
If the knob is rotated clockwise then the stereo centre
shifts to the right.
Turn the knob counter-clockwise and the stereo centre
shifts to the left.
Volume level control by means of a high-quality qua-
druple potentiometer with extremely low balance error.
Rotate the knob clockwise to increase volume.
Turning the knob counter-clockwise reduces the volume.

Normally the tone and balance control knobs are
recessed into the front panel. If you press any of the
knobs lightly it will project out of the front panel, and you
can then rotate it. Each rotary control has a clear centre
detent where the index mark points upwards.
After making any adjustments push the knob lightly back
into the front panel, where it will engage automatically.
