ADJUSTMENT OF THE IGNITION TIMING
Adjust the ignition timing according to the adjustment procedure and technical requirement accor-
ding to the repair manual. Never try to adjust the ignition timing when one is not sure of the adjust-
ment procedure and technical requirement.
INSPECTION OF THE CONTROL PART OF THE IGNITION ADVANCE
The control of the ignition advance is to guarantee that the ignition system can ignite at the appro-
priate time during the compression stroke. The control of the ignition advance includes: mechanical
advance control, vacuum advance control, and electronic advance control, etc.
NOTE: The inspection methods of the vehicle's ignition advance vary great-
ly. The following mentioned method is the general method to inspect me-
chanical/centrifugal type ignition advance. When checking the ignition ad-
vancing angle, one should confirm that the reference ignition time and the
closing angle are correct. Refer to the repair manual to understand correct
inspection procedure and technical requirement. Make sure that all the sa-
fety rules are observed.
INSPECTION OF MECHANICAL/CENTRIFUGAL IGNITION ADVANCE
1.
The displayed advance angle of the timing light is"0". If not, press the increase/decrease button
to set the display to zero.
2.
When inspecting the above reference ignition timing, raise the rotating speed to the specified
standard, observe the change of the ignition timing. The movement of the timing scale should
be stable; the movement direction should be opposite to the engine rotation direction.
NOTE: If the timing scale doesn't move stably or in the wrong way, there may
be something wrong with the advance control of the mechanical ignition.
Before inspecting and testing other items, the advancing control part should
be maintained and repaired according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3.
According to the needs, press the increa-
se/decrease button of the advance an-
gle, until the timing indicator positioned
with the reference timing scale like befo-
re. Get the read of the advance angle on
the digital display screen.
4.
Compare the displayed degrees with the degrees specified by the manufacturer. If the ignition
timing doesn't change when checking the advance control of the mechanical/centrifugal igni-
tion, then the fly block of the system may be rusted or stuck.
5.
If necessary, repeat the inspection within all the rotating speed range specified by the manu-
facturer.
INSPECTION OF THE VACUUM IGNITION ADVANCE
NOTE: When inspecting the vacuum ignition advance, a manual vacuum
pump with a vacuum gauge is needed.
1.
Turn off the engine, take off the vacuum pipe of the vacuum advance device from the distribu-
tor, and block the vacuum pipe.
2.
Connect the manual vacuum pump to the vacuum interface of the distributor. No vacuum
should be applied at this time.
3.
Start the engine, check the reference ignition time according to the above method and record it.
4.
Apply the specified degree of vacuum on the control device of the vacuum advance of the dis-
tributor with the manual vacuum pump according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5.
Align the timing lamp with the timing scale, press the increase/decrease button, until the indi-
cating mark coincides with the reference timing scale. (see step 7-3)
6.
The difference between the reading recorded at step 7-3 and that of step 8-5 is the value of the
vacuum advancing control, compare this value with the specified value.
