3.3.2 Relative Contraindications
The following indications require consultation with a physician: skin diseases/injuries, inflamma­
tion, prominent scars that are swollen, reddening and hyperthermia of the fitted limb/body area;
lymphatic flow disorders, including unclear soft tissue swelling distal to the body area to which
the medical device will be applied; sensory and circulatory disorders in the lower leg and the foot
area.
3.4 Effects
The orthosis relieves the calcaneus by providing targeted support to the longitudinal arch beneath
the os naviculare as well as a form-fitting enclosure for the metatarsals and the calf. Accelerated
bone healing is achieved by applying the basic principle of the Ilizarov technique (compression
and distraction of the fractured areas). An almost natural rollover of the injured foot with the
orthosis exerts a positive influence on the neuromuscular structures and calcareous salt content
of the bone. The functioning muscle pump may also contribute to thrombosis prophylaxis.
3.5 Treatment and therapy plan
The individual therapy plan is determined by the physician and is independent of the type of frac­
ture and treatment approach.
After the swelling subsides or the stitches are removed: fitting of the orthosis with insertion of the
plantar pad (4 hrs.)
Days 8–12 Full weight-bearing without crutches
Week 4 1st x-ray evaluation (lateral view of upper ankle, special/lateral view of cal­
caneus, upper ankle under full weight bearing/Hallgrimsson imaging)
Week 6 Insert 1st compression pad
Week 8 2nd x-ray evaluation
Insert 2nd compression pad
Week 10 Insert 3rd compression pad
Week 11 If necessary, take measurements for orthopaedic footwear or insoles (within 5–6
days)
Week 12 Conclusion of medical treatment / test for fitness for work for worker's compens­
ation cases
