THE STEPS OF THE PROCESS
A) Wound dressing (Figure 2)
Place a bandage over the wound area. An occlusive dressing is favourable
for effective wound healing. Use an absorbent dressing.
B) Selecting size of liner (Figure 3)
To determine the correct size of Iceross Post-Op liner, bend the knee
slightly allowing the soft tissue to hang down.
Measure 4 cm up from the distal end of the residual limb and place a
small mark on the dressing/residual limb. The correct size of Iceross
liner is determined by measuring the circumference of the residual limb
at this point. The measurement should be taken daily and recorded on
the treatment chart. It is advisable to choose an Iceross liner matching
the actual measurement, to give the patient a positive first experience of
using the liner and to avoid the risk of an unpleasant degree of
compression. As the oedema decreases, shown by a reduced
circumference of the residual limb, the Iceross Post-Op liner size should
be reduced. This ensures that Iceross Post-Op liner matches the residual
limb size in order to maintain continuous compression therapy.
Compression of the residual limb is essential. If the amputee experiences
discomfort or pain caused by the compression, a larger size liner should
be chosen.
C) Donning the Iceross
1. Remove the Iceross Post-Op liner from its packaging.
2. Place one hand inside the liner and turn it inside out.
3. Ensure the liner is fully inverted exposing as much of the bottom as
possible. Position the bottom of the liner directly against the distal
residual limb (Figure 4).
4. Roll the liner all the way up the limb (Figure 5 & 6).
5. Feel along the length of the liner to ensure no air pockets are present;
if air pockets are found reapply the liner.
6. Communicate with the amputee at all times to ensure there is no
discomfort experienced.
D) Doff ing the Iceross
1. Before removing the Iceross liner, record the time that it has been
worn on the limb on the treatment chart (Figure 7).
NOTE: treatment charts in size A4 can be downloaded from your local
website.
2. Roll off the Iceross liner.
3. Following removal, invert the Iceross liner back to its normal position.
E) Daily use of Iceross
Iceross Post-Op Liner is donned for one hour in the morning and one
hour in the afternoon on the first day, two hours in the morning and two
hours in the afternoon on the second day, three hours in the morning
and three hours in the afternoon on the third day and four hours in the
morning and four hours in the afternoon on the fourth day. This is
considered full use and the days following this, Iceross is applied for four
hours twice daily until the medical staff have decided that the
compression treatment is completed and the residual limb is ready for
prosthetic fitting.
