INTRODUCTION
Amputation of the lower extremities is often the result of a long and
difficult period of illness. The underlying pathology making amputation
necessary is often chronic and progressive. The process may involve
prolonged efforts and multiple surgical procedures to save the limb,
often taxing the patients strength.
The rehabilitation of such patients is a challenge and a multidisciplinary
team approach has proven to be a good solution.
Iceross silicone liners have been used in hospitals for compression
therapy following transtibial amputation, in the last decade, with good
results. This manual describes a method for using Iceross Post-Op
silicone liners in compression therapy, following amputation surgery. It is
important for health care specialists that are planning to use this method
to adapt the protocol to their own environment.
The main objectives of Iceross Post-Op are to:
• Diminish oedema
• Shape the residual limb
• Contribute to pain relief
• Accelerate the rehabilitation process
USE OF ICEROSS
Best results from an Iceross Post-Op liner will be obtained if a rigid
dressing (ORD) has been applied to the residual limb immediately
following amputation surgery and used for 5–7 days.
Compression therapy with the Iceross Post-Op liner should start 5–7 days
post-operatively. Use of the silicone liner at his early stage is essential, as
the largest change in residual limb volume occurs during the first weeks
after amputation.
Compression therapy is most effective during this period.
The liner is introduced gradually ensuring the amputee and residual limb
become accustomed to the compression and new environment.
BENEFITS OF COMPRESSION THERAPY USING ICEROSS
LINER (Figure 1)
Secures a high quality compression treatment
The tapered liner ensures the same graduated compression that
decreases proximally independent of who applies the liner.
Makes the residual limb mature more effectively
Early treatment with Iceross Post-Op liner has been shown to facilitate
early mobilization and speed up the maturation process of the residual
limb. This makes it possible to provide the amputee with a prosthesis at
an earlier stage leading to less dependence on medical staff.
Shapes the residual limb
Compression therapy with Iceross Post-Op liner gives the residual limb
an optimal shape for prosthetic socket fitting, thereby reducing the risk of
prosthetic complications.
