Measurements

The following measurements can be done with
the HM8015:
Voltage Volt
The rms value of the voltage applied to the
measurement circuit is measured by a and is
shown in the display
automatic, the measurement range is indicated
by the range-LEDs
Current AMP
The rms value of the current in the measurement
circuit is measured by a and is shown in the
display
. The range selection is automatic, the
measurement range is indicated by the range-
LEDs
.
Active Power WATT
Measurement of the active power P, which is
calculated from the integration of the instan-
taneous power (product of instantaneous voltage
and current) for a period and division by the cycle
duration T.
The range selection is automatic, the respective
measurement range of voltage and current is
indicated by the range-LEDs
Reactive Power Var
Measurement of the reactive power Q, which is
calculated from the rms voltage and the reactive
current. The reactive power is displayed as a po-
sitive value (without sign) irrespective of any
capacitive or inductive loads.
The range selection is automatic, the respective
measurement range of voltage and current is
indicated by the range-LEDs
The reactive power display will also show
correct values if voltage or current are
non-sinusoidal. The apparent power (U
x I
) and the active power (arithmetic
rms
mean of u(t) x i(t) ) are independent of the
waveform, the reactive power is calcu-
lated from both.

Apparent Power VA
Measurement of the apparent power V
calculated from the multiplication of the rms
values of voltage and current measured. The

apparent power is further equal to the geometric
sum of active and reactive power.
The range selection is automatic, the respective
measurement range of voltage and current is
indicated by the range-LEDs
Power Factor PF
Measurement of the power factor PF. After selec-
tion of this measurement function the correspon-
ding LED
active power and apparent power will be dis-
played
.
The range selection is automatic, the respective
measurement range of voltage and current is
indicated by the range-LEDs
The HM8015 allows the measurement of the
average of the instantaneous power irrespective
of the waveform as long as the specifications for
crest factor and frequency are observed.
Please note that a power factor can only
be shown for AC or AC + DC signals of
sufficient minimum amplitudes. If the signal
amplitude of either voltage or current or both
is insufficient horizontal bars will be displayed,
this will also be the case if DC is being measured.
STOP
cos ϕ is only defined for truly sinusoidal
signals. As soon as at least one of the
signals is distorted a cos ϕ derived from
the phase shift between voltage and cur-
rent will not be identical to the true power.

Safety intructions
Please observe all relevant safety
instructions if voltages higher than the
ones listed below are applied to the IN-
PUT terminals.
Keep DC voltages disconnected from
ground.
rms
Isolate AC voltages by inserting an isola-
tion transformer.

of the following values are considered to
