Whether the point of attachment has been selected well acoustically can be
tried out by triggering a test alarm (see "Installation") while a genuinely sleeping
person is in the bedroom.
The smoke detector has to wake the person! It may not just
be audible!
With the following rooms and places, installation of the smoke detector
can be problematical:
• Kitchen/bathroom
Kitchen vapours from cooking or the high humidity in the bathroom can
trigger a false alarm.
• Garages
Exhaust from the car, motor-bike or other combustion engines can lead to
a false alarm.
• Dusty and dirty rooms.
The measuring chamber of the smoke detector contaminates very quickly.
This can cause a wrong alarm as well as malfunction in the event of a real
fire!
• Locations with strong wind movement
Smoke detection may be bad or late near windows or near fans, blowers,
lamps, tube lights, halogen transformers, chimneys etc
• Vicinity of steel supports, large metallic area, metal doors etc.
This adversely affects the radio range to the alarm dialler.
• Tobacco smoke
The smoke detector cannot recognise whether it is just "harmless" cigarette/
cigar smoke or a genuine fire.
There are smoke detectors which possess a sensitivity setting.
In the event of a real fire, this however causes late triggering of
an alarm, which allows less response time for extinguishing a fire
or rescue or flight of persons.
