Basic Concept of the Hameg
HM8131-2 Function Generator
The HM8131-2 is a signal generator based on the Direct
Digital Synthesis (DDS) principle. The signal forms are
stored in an EPROM and/or are calculated during the
generation. This principle causes limitations of the
maximum signal frequency which is caused by the limited
frequency range of the transducers, storage and
processor. Consequently, not all types of signals
generated by the HM8131-2 are available at the maximum
frequency of 15MHz.
Introduction for HM8131-2 Operation
Self-Test
When the HM8131-2 is initially turned on the following
information is displayed
• Type and Version (i.e. HM8131-2, 1.0)
• Date of Last Calibration
• Type of Interface
• IEEE Address (if IEEE-488 interface is installed)
• Time Basis (internal or external)
• List of installed Options
After the self-test phase is completed, the HM8131-2
will select the operating mode that was used before the
instrument was switched off.
At delivery the instrument is adjusted for a basic set-up
as follows:
• Frequency: 1kHz
• Amplitude: 10V pp
• Offset:
0V
• Sine Wave Output
• Operating Mode: Free-running
• Phase: 0 degree
• No Modulation
• Rotary Control: Actuated
• Internal Reference Frequency
• Trigger: Positive Rise
• Background Lighting: Medium
• Contrast: Maximum
• Audio Signal: High Audio Output
• Maximum Resolution of the Frequency Display
This basic adjustment can be recalled at any time as
follows:
• Hold ESC Button for a few seconds during Power ON.
This will cancel any other adjustments.
Notice: When the HM8131-2 basic adjustment is
recalled, any stored arbitrary function or any other
keyboard adjustments are canceled.
Signal Types
The HM8131-2 offers the selection of six different
"wired" signals and the arbitrary function. The
30
waveshapes ramp (positive, negative), triangle, sine and
square can be varied in frequency and amplitude. The
function "noise" provides white-noise which can be
varied in amplitude only. The arbitrary function is available
with a waveform length of 4k or 16k and can be freely
defined within the instrument's specifications.
Ramp
The frequency range is limited from 0.1Hz to 100KHz as
caused by the digital signal generation. The linearity is
better than 1%. The maximum output voltage is 20Vpp
open circuit. The function can be selected with a positive
or negative ramp. The typical rise and fall times are 45ns.
Triangle
• The maximum frequency is 1MHz
• The linearity is better than 1%
• The maximum output voltage is 20Vpp, open circuit.
Sine
•
The maximum frequency range is 15MHz, Resoluti-
on is 0.1mHz
•
The maximum output voltage is 20Vpp, open circuit.
Square
• The maximum frequency range is 15MHz
• The resolution is 0.1mHz
• The rise and fall times are less than 10ns.
• The maximum output voltage is 20Vpp, open circuit
White Noise
•
The bandwidth is 10MHz
•
The distribution is Gaussian
Arbitrary Waveforms
• The maximum signal frequency is 10MHz with a
sampling rate of 40MHz
• Resolution of the defined signal has 4096 points
the Y direction (12 bit)
• Frequency resolution is 0.1Hz
• Signal length is available with 4k or 16k words
• Internal recording capability is 4k nonvolatile and 16k
volatile
• The signal is shaped by a 7th order Bessel filter,
10MHz
Menu Structure
The operation of the HM8131-2 is primarily menu
controlled. The parameters are adjusted via the key pad
or the digital rotary control. The structure of the menu is
self explanatory.
It starts with the basic menu in which the frequency is
displayed and the basic functions, sine wave, triangle
and square wave can be selected. From there sub menus
with allows auxiliary functions and less required
adjustments can be reached. The activated function is
marked with a displayed arrow.
