WORKING AT A HEIGHT FROM A ROPE AND HARNESS
Never operate a tree service chainsaw at a height from a rope
and harness when you are alone. Working at a height from a
rope and harness must be performed only by two operators:
Ground worker - prepares the product for use and
assists the tree operator. The ground operator should be
trained in appropriate emergency procedures.
Tree operator - climbs the tree to cut the branches. The
tree operator should be trained in general safe climbing
and work positioning techniques. The tree operator should
be properly equipped with a harness, ropes, strops,
carabiners, and other equipment for maintaining secure
and safe working positions for both himself and the product.
Preparing to use the product in the tree
The ground worker should inspect the product, fi ll the oil tank,
power on the product, and power off and engage the chain brake.
The product should be fi tted with a suitable strop for
attachment to the operator's harness.
Secure the strop around the hanging ring on the rear of
the product.
Provide suitable carabiners to allow indirect (i.e. via the
strop) and direct attachment (i.e. at the attachment point
on the product) of the product to the operator's harness.
Ensure that the product is securely attached when sent
up to the operator.
Ensure that the product is secured to the harness before
disconnecting it from the means of ascent.
The ability to directly attach the product to the harness
reduces the risk of damage to the equipment when moving
around the tree.
Power off the product when it is directly attached to the
harness.
The product should only be attached to the recommended
attachment points on the harness. These may be at the
mid-point (front or rear) or at the sides. Wherever possible,
the product should be attached to the centre rear midpoint
to keep it clear of climbing lines and to support its weight
centrally down the operator's spine.
8
When moving the product from any one attachment point
to another, the operator should ensure that it is secured
in the new position before releasing it from the previous
attachment point.
Using the product in the tree
Always adopt a secure work position that allows you to hold
both handles of the product. Most accidents occur because
of inappropriate use and unstable work position, which
results in an increased risk of injury due to the following:
not having a firm grip on the product if it kicks back
a lack of control of the product, such that it contacts
climbing lines and the operator's body
loss of control owing to an insecure work position
and resulting in contact with the product (unexpected
movement of the product during operation)
Securing the work position for two-handed use
In order to allow the product to be held with both hands, as a
general rule, the tree operator should aim for a secure work
position in which the product is operated at:
hip level, when cutting horizontal sections, and
solar-plexus level, when cutting vertical sections.
Where the operator is working close into vertical stems with
low lateral forces on the work position, secure footing could
be all that is needed for maintaining a secure work position.
However, as operators move away from the stem, they will
need to take measures to remove or counteract increasing
lateral forces by, for example, redirecting the main line via
a supplementary anchor point or using an adjustable strop
direct from the harness to a supplementary anchor point.
Gaining a secure footing at the work position can be aided by
the use of a temporary foot stirrup created from an endless sling.
Starting the product in the tree
When starting the product in the tree, perform the following:
engage the chain brake before starting
hold the product with both hands by the designated
handles
