Accessibility
Make sure that the connection for the power cord is easily acces-
sible and located as close to the operator as possible. When
disconnecting the power supply unplug the cable from the power
outlet.
Extension cord
If an extension cord or power strip is used, make sure that the
cable or strip is rated for the instrument and that the total ampere
ratings of all objects plugged into the extension cord or power
strip do not exceed 80% of the extension cord or strip ampere
rating limit. Do not obstruct the movement of the impeller blade
during operation to avoid crushing and shearing injuries or dam-
age to the device. Do not circumvent any safety measures.
II.4 Secure Operation and Service
Do not obstruct the movement of the rotor during operation. Keep
fingers, etc. away while the rotor is in operation in order to avoid
crushing and shearing injuries or damage to the device. Do not
try to remove the protection cap while the instrument is in oper-
ation. Always stop or abort the procedure before handling the
rotor. Do not circumvent any safety measures.
Secure operation
Secure operation is no longer possible if any of the following
damage occurs. Immediately switch off the RCS
Ex, unplug the instrument from electrical outlet, and contact
your authorized local service provider. Use of a damaged instru-
ment is expressly prohibited.
WARNING
Do not use the instrument if one or more of the following
incidents occur:
• Damage to housing, power supply, power cord, extension cord,
or plug
• Spillage of liquids into the interior of the device, exposure
of the instrument to water or other fluids
• Entry of an object into the openings of the instrument
• Appearance of smoke
• The instrument has been dropped or damaged
• The instrument is not working properly when following in-
structions
Servicing
Unless otherwise mentioned in the supplied documentation, do
not service the equipment yourself. Do not open or remove any
cover other than the battery cover of the RCS
microbial air sampler and electrical accessory hardware since
this may cause exposure to electrical shock. Covers are to be
opened only by personnel trained and authorized by Merck.
Service required on components inside the instrument should be
carried out only by personnel trained and authorized by Merck.
Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization
WARNING
Rotor, protection cap, and air direction ring can be autoclaved
at 121 ˚C for 20 minutes.

electrical accessory hardware from the outlet before cleaning.
Do not subject any electric equipment to heat sterilization.
To protect the motor and the electronic circuits, avoid exposure
to excessive amounts of moisture, from immersion or over-use
of sprays. Avoid moisture on electrical contacts.

The housing of the RCS
Plus/RCS
can be disinfected by spraying or wiping with commercial disin-
fectants. Use of aerosol cleaning agents is not recommended.
If liquid cleaning agents are used we recommend a wiping disin-
fection with agents compatible with polycarbonates, stainless
steel and aniodized aluminium, i.e. 70% Ethanol. Use of aerosol
cleaning agents is not recommended. For compatibility informa-
tion please contact the supplier of the disinfectant agent.
To protect the motor and the electronic circuits, avoid exposure
to excessive amounts of moisture, from immersion or over-use of
sprays. Avoid moisture on electrical contacts. The instrument
itself cannot be autoclaved. When operating the RCS
Plus Ex microbial air sampler in aseptic environments it is recom-
mended to use sterile sleeves (Art. No. 1.44199.0010) covering
instrument parts that are not autoclaveable. Please take care
that the openings of the air direction ring remain completely un-
covered.
Hazardous material
If the instrument gets in contact with hazardous material it is
recommended to wear protective gloves, protective clothing, and
safety glasses to prevent contact with skin and eyes. If hazardous
