II. Warnings and Precautions
Microbial air samplers of the RCS
Plus Ex) are designed for collection of ambient air employing the
Centrifugal Impaction Principle according to Reuter (Reuter Cen-
®
trifugal Sampler, RCS ). The microbial air samplers are designed
to operate safely when used by trained personnel according to
the general safety practices and the instructions set forth in this
user manual. The guidelines in this section explain the potential
risks associated with the operation of the instrument and pro-
vide safety information in order to minimize these risks. By care-
fully following the instructions, you can protect yourself and the
equipment from potential hazard and create a safe work envi-
ronment. If this instrument is used in a manner not specified by
the manufacturer safety risks may increase.
IMPORTANT
Please read and follow all operation instructions in this user
manual and pay attention to all warnings displayed on the in-
strument. Retain this user manual and any other safety and
operating instructions provided with the instrument in a place
accessible to all users for future reference.
IMPORTANT
Microbial air samplers of the RCS
Plus Ex) are intended for indoor use. For outdoor use please
carefully follow the instructions for safe operation of electri-
cal equipement as well as chapter II.2.

Only the RCS Plus Ex microbial air sampler can be used in
explosion hazard areas. Please refer to chapter 9 for more
information. Do not use the RCS
in areas classified as hazardous locations where a fire and/or
explosion hazard may exist (e.g. flammable gasses or vapors,
flammable liquids, or combustible dust).
IMPORTANT
Contact your local authority governing electrical power supply,
building constructions, maintenance, or safety for more infor-
mation regarding the safe installation of the equipment. If you
have a serious concern regarding the safe use of your RCS
®
RCS Plus Ex microbial air sampler please contact your autho-

(referred to as "Merck").

II.1 General Precautions
To reduce the potential risks associated with operating the RCS
®
®
Plus/RCS Plus Ex microbial air sampler please note this general
precaution. Failure to observe these precautions may result in fire,
bodily harm and/or damage of the instrument.
Electrical shock
WARNING
Electrical devices pose a risk of an electric shock. To reduce
the risk of an electric shock, do not open the device, or any
other electrical accessory hardware supplied by Merck. Special
care must be taken while handling fluids. Do not allow fluids
to enter the interior of the device.
WARNING
A potential risk exists if an opened or damaged device is used,

if liquids are spilled into the instrument or other electrical
hardware, or if an object has entered the instrument through
any openings.
II.2 Mounting Accessories, Air Circulation,
Water and Moisture
Mounting accessories
Do not place the RCS
cart, stand, tripod or bracket. As a consequence, the instrument
might fall down. This may cause bodily harm and/or serious
damage to the instrument. Use only a stand or tripod recom-
mended by Merck, or is sold with the instrument.
Air circulation
The instrument should not be placed next to equipment that
produces heat. Prevent direct exposure to sunlight. Openings
should never be blocked or covered during operation. Never push
a foreign object through an opening into the instrument.
Water and moisture
Do not use the instrument in a wet or damp location. Avoid hu-
midity or condensation higher then specified. Protect the device
®
against water splashes.
II.3 Power Sources and Peripheral Devices
The instrument can be operated with a suitable power supply
and a country-specific power cord containing a three-wire elec-
trical grounding type plug that has a third pin for grounding.
This plug only fits into a grounded power outlet. This is a safety
feature. Do not try to insert the plug into a non-grounded power
outlet. If you cannot insert the plug into the outlet contact your
local electrician to replace the outlet.
Power sources
The instrument should only be operated from a power source in-
dicated on the products' electrical rating label (type plate). Use
power supply units recommended by the supplier. Please use the
power cord delivered by Merck or a power cord that is compati-
ble with local requirements. If you have questions about the type
Plus/
of power source to be used, contact your authorized Customer
Service or local power company.
