equipment available on the market several times a year, or on a
permanent basis, are obliged to accept returns. This also applies
for cases of sales using telecommunication means if the storage
and shipping areas for electrical and electronic equipment are at
least 400 m² or the total storage and shipping areas are at least
800 m². Distributors must generally ensure returns by providing
suitable return facilities at a reasonable distance from the respec-
tive end user. The possibility to return an end-of-life device free of
charge exists for distributors who are obliged to accept a return, if,
for example, a new device of the same type, which essentially ful-
fills the same functions, is supplied to a consumer. If a new device
is delivered to a private household, the similar end-of-life device
may also be handed over there for collection free of charge; in the
case of distribution using telecommunication means, this applies
to devices in categories 1, 2 or 4 as defined in Section 2, para. 1 of
the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, that is, "heat
transmitters", "display equipment" or "large-scale devices" (the
latter must have at least one external dimension of more than 50
centimetres). Consumers are asked about their intention to return
goods when they conclude a purchase contract. There is also the
option of a free return to a distributor's collection point, regardless
of the purchase of a new device, for end-of-life devices which do
not measure more than 25 centimetres in any external dimension;
this limited to three end-of-life devices per type of device.
4. Data protection note
End of life devices often contain sensitive personal data. This
applies in particular to information and telecommunications tech-
nology devices, such as computers and smartphones. In your own
interest, please note that end users are responsible for deleting
the data on the end of life devices to be disposed of.
5. Meaning of the "crossed out dustbin" icon
The icon with a crossed-out dustbin regularly displayed on
electrical and electronic equipment indicates that the device
in question must be collected separately from unsorted
domestic waste at the end of its service life.
6. Battery
Before disposal, remove the inserted 9 V block battery and dispose
of it separately.
