Installation of the basic carrier bars for rails

WARNING
If the basic carrier bars for rails and/or add-on carrying equipment
come loose from the vehicle, you and other persons may be injured or
there may be damage to property.
Please therefore observe the following information:
Check the basic carrier bars for rails are securely attached in the
following situations:
before departing on any journey
for the first time 31 miles (50 km) after beginning the journey
at regular intervals depending on the road conditions, and at
the latest after 1553 miles (2500 km) of continual use
If the basic carrier bars for rails are not securely attached, repeat
the process of installing the basic carrier bars for rails.
Do not use damaged or defective basic carrier bars for rails or
add-on carrying equipment.
Installation/removal is illustrated using front basic carrier bar for rails (1)
by way of example.
Installation should be carried out with the help of a second person in
order to avoid damaging the vehicle.
Installing the front basic carrier bar for rails
1. Unlock cover caps (8) on both sides with key (4) and fold them up.
2. Pull quick-tightening device (9) in the direction of the arrow and turn
counter-clockwise as far as it will go.
3. Place the front basic carrier bar for rails (1) on the roof rails.
4. Using tape measure (5) measure the distance (X)=21,7 inch
(550 mm) between the end strip of the windshield and the center of
quick-tightening device (9).
5. Position basic carrier bar for rails (1) at distance (X).

Note
Make sure that clamping claw (10) and support (11) are positively
positioned on the roof rail.
6. Turn quick-tightening device (9) clockwise until you hear it engage in
position.
7. Push quick-tightening device (9) in the opposite direction to the
arrow and engage it in position.
8. Fold down cover caps (8) on both sides and lock them with key (4).
If cover cap (8) cannot be closed, slightly turn quick-tightening
device (9).
Installing the rear basic carrier bar for rails
1. Install rear basic carrier bar for rails (2) at a distance of (Y)=29,5 inch
(750 mm) as with front basic carrier bar for rails (1).
Installing add-on carrying equipment
Observe the Installation Instructions of your Mercedes-Benz add-on
carrying equipment. You can obtain further information at a
Mercedes-Benz Center.
