Service Tips

Sensor maintenance is normally required more frequently
on sensors that are exposed to ozone continuously.
The need for electrolyte change is usually indicated by
a downward drift in ozone reading as described in the
services section. However, when automatic PID control
of the ozone generation system is based on the point 1
measurement, the controller will increase the ozonation
rate to maintain the reading at the set point. In this case,
the symptoms will be an increasing ozonation rate and
colorimetric measurements that are consistently increasing
above the on-line instrument reading.
Once experience has been gained with a particular ozone
generation system, a sensor maintenance schedule can be
established to minimize process interruption.
Troubleshooting Tips
If zero current is unstable or out of range:
• Water on membrane
– Verify that the membrane surface is dry
• Bubbles in electrolyte
– Remove membrane cartridge, check for air bubbles
trapped in electrolyte
• Depleted electrolyte
– Replace electrolyte, reassemble and recalibrate
sensor
• Expired membrane
– Replace membrane and electrolyte, reassemble
and recalibrate sensor
• Expired interior body
– Replace interior body of sensor, membrane and
electrolyte, reassemble and recalibrate sensor
If slope is too low:
• Contamination of cathode (e.g. oils on skin)
– Gently clean the cathode with warm soapy water
– Rinse the cathode after cleaning with plenty of
deionized water
• Depleted electrolyte
– Replace electrolyte, reassemble and recalibrate
sensor
