Filtration

A critical moment during crossflow filtration is starting up the system. In the
process, the liquid to be filtered reaches the membrane surface, which is still
clean and upon which a secondary layer has not yet formed. In addition the
retentate flows across the membranes at a rate that is not yet constant and
insufficient for crossflow conditions. A high permeate flux rate through the
membranes is initially attained. This causes substances to be increasingly
deposited on the membranes. As a result, the membranes become easily
blocked, which reduces the flux rate of your cassette(s).
Therefore, proceed as follows to start filtration:
— Make sure that the permeate area is filled with one of the liquids
listed below:
— the rinse water last used
— isotonic physiological saline
— permeate
To prime the system using one of the liquids listed above, follow the
directions given in the section entitled "2 .5 Flushing the Filter Cassettes" .
— Open the retentate outlet; i.e., p
— Pump the liquid, which is to be filtered, through the system. In doing so,
slowly increase the pressure at the retentate inlet up to the desired value.
— Then open the permeate outlet slowly.
— Set the desired filtration parameters.
