A false positive indication occurs when the patient feels the stimulus
even when the pulpal tissue is dead. This can be caused by a patient
sensing the stimulation in an adjacent tooth which makes contact with
the test tooth. The patient may also sense a periodontal neural stimulus
rather than a stimulation of the pulpal nerve. The sensation of a
periodontal response is quite different than a pulpal response, so we
suggest that you compare the sensation of a tooth being pulptested with
the direct stimulation of periodontal tissue before you begin pulptesting.
7. The Vitality Scanner turns off automatically 10 to 15 seconds
after contact is broken between the probe and the tooth. The
automatic power-off feature saves battery life and permits you to install
the unit at some distance from your chair since only the probe needs
to be readily accessible.
8. The Vitality Scanner is powered by four 1.5V size AA alkaline
batteries. The voltage is electronically stabilized so the function of
the Vitality Scanner is independent of the battery voltage. The voltage
stabilization eliminates the risk of faulty diagnosis due to the voltage
fluctuations of depleted batteries. Two dots will begin to flash on the
display when the batteries are getting low. You should change your
batteries as soon as you see the two dots appear.
9. Accessories Model 2006 comes with a short and a long probe
tip. Also included with each model is a grounding lead with lip clip.
You may also purchase additional tips, grounding leads, and lip clips.

Using the Vitality Scanner
The following procedure is recommended for using the Vitality Scanner:
1. Before using the instrument for the first time, adjust the sweep rate
to its lowest setting by turning the panel wheel to "1" . Connect the
grounding lead to the probe wand and insert the tip into the front of
the probe wand.
2. Attach the lip clip to the patient's lip. Alternatively, the patient may
choose to hold the lip clip in his/her hand.
3. Dry the tooth to be tested.
4. Dip the probe tip in a small amount of fluoride gel and place it on
the side of the tooth. Do not make contact with the gum.
5. The light on the probe wand will turn on when you have achieved
a good electrical contact. Hold the probe in contact with the tooth,
and lift it from the tooth when the patient perceives the stimulus.
6. The response level is shown on the digital display.
7. After a delay of two seconds you can begin testing the next tooth.
The display resets automatically when you make contact.
8. After you are finished testing your Vitality Scanner will turn off
automatically after 10 to 15 seconds.
Normal response ranges are: Incisors 10–40
Frequently asked questions about the Vitality Scanner
1. Why is the Vitality Scanner better than other units on the market?
The main reason why the Vitality Scanner is better is that it never
jolts the patient like the other units do. Its patented contact sensing
feature prevents the unit from turning on and increasing the output
unless there is a good electrical contact with the tooth. With other
units you never know if the current is actually flowing through the
tooth. In some cases you may have mechanical contact with the tooth
but not electrical contact. When this happens the output stimulus can
get very high without the patient feeling anything. If contact is suddenly
made at this high output level, the patient will receive a powerful and
painful jolt.
Other advantages are the automatically increasing output which assures
a gentle increase in the stimulus level and the automatic reset function

which resets the output to its lowest level after lifting the tip away
from the tooth. No longer do you have to remember to turn the output
down before proceeding to the next tooth.
2. Can I use the unit while wearing gloves? Yes, a grounding lead
with lip clip is delivered with each unit. The grounding lead provides
a conductive path for the electrical current even if you are wearing
gloves. One end clips onto the shaft of the probe wand, the other to
an autoclavable stainless steel lip clip. This lip clip can be placed on
the lip of the patient or can be held in the patient's hand.
3. What kind of conductive medium do you recommend between
the tip and the tooth? We recommend topical fluoride gel. Toothpaste
or an electrode paste may also be used, but the topical gel conducts
electricity better than toothpaste and is generally more readily available
to general practitioners than electrode paste. If you want to use
toothpaste, gel type toothpastes work the best. However, please note
that Sensodyne is a poor conductor and should be avoided.
4. Do I have to dry the tooth before using the Vitality Scanner?
No, the Vitality Scanner is relatively insensitive to moisture. However,
the tip should not contact the gingiva or a metallic filling which in
turn could make contact with the gingiva or an adjacent tooth. All you
need to do is place the electrode squarely on the side of the tooth.
5. How do I know when to change the batteries? The two decimal
points for the display numbers with light up when the batteries run low.
6. What does the stimulus feel like from the patient's perspective?
The sensation is a pulsating feeling which increases in strength. The
patient will feel it long before it starts to hurt. Some people think it
feels like a pressure, others like a warming or a tingling sensation.
We recommend that you try it on yourself before using it on a patient
so you have an idea of how the stimulus feels.
7. Can I test crowned teeth? Yes, we have a special mini-tip/crown
test probe with a fine wire which can be used below the crown margin.
The wire is insulated with only the tip surface exposed. It does not
matter if the wire touches the gingiva. It works best, however, if the
margin is open.
8. Can I use the device on a patient with a pacemaker?
Although the current is very low we recommend that you do not use
it on a patient with pacemaker.
9. Do I have to isolate the tooth being tested from adjacent teeth?
Generally not. However, if there is a large metallic filling in contact
with an adjacent tooth, isolation with a rubber dam may be necessary.
10. What rate of increase do you recommend? We recommend
that you start with a low rate of increase until you get comfortable
with the operation of the Vitality Scanner. A rate in the range of 5 to 7
is common for experienced practitioners.
11. Do I have to wait until the unit turns off before proceeding
|to the next tooth? No, you can proceed after waiting two seconds.
The display will reset to zero as soon as you touch the next tooth
with the tip.
Cleaning, Sterilization, and Maintenance
Sterilization
Probes and lip clips must be cleaned and sterilized before every use:
1. Clean with water and mild, non-abrasive, detergent such as dish
washing liquid. Dry thoroughly.
2. Double wrap the probes and clips using a typical central service
wrapping technique and place into autoclave unit avoiding contact
with other instruments.
3. Operate sterilization cycle at 250°F for 30 minutes or 270°F for
25 minutes. Follow the instructions supplied with your autoclave unit
for specific operating instructions.
Expected Life of Accessories
All accessories are reusable only for a limited number of procedures.
This number is highly dependent on how and for what duration the
instrument is used during each procedure and, therefore, will vary
significantly from user to user. If the device function appears to be
erratic, an accessory may have exceeded its useful life and should
be replaced.
Cleaning
The Vitality Scanner 2006 enclosure, probe wand, cord, and grounding
lead should be wiped down with a cloth soaked in any of the common
non-abrasive, mild, cleaning liquids containing alcohol. Do not
submerge the device or let liquid enter the enclosure.
Maintenance
To replace the batteries simply remove the two ( 2 ) screws and battery
cover on the bottom of the unit. Replace with only high quality size
AA alkaline batteries. During replacement, note proper battery
alignment. Misalignment of battery cell polarity can lead to device
malfunction. Replace the cover and screws. There are no other user
serviceable items within the unit.
