3 INFORMATION ON STARTING UP THE
MACHINE

3.1 Basic information

• Prior to the fi rst start-up and before any other start-up, the
proper operating status of the unit must be inspected.
Units that, for example, are found to be defective upon
delivery or during installation must not be operated.
• Set-up, installation, operation and maintenance must only
be performed by properly trained and qualifi ed specialists.
Operation following incorrect installation, maintenance or
unapproved replacement of components constitutes non-
designated use and renders the warranty void. The resul-
tant risk shall be borne solely by the customer or owner.
Note!
Reliable protection against incursion by foreign
matter, rust, airborne rust and other iron oxides
is provided.

3.2 Assembly, Installation

• Protect the blower from the weather and install it in a hori-
zontal position. For outdoor use, protection from the weath-
er must generally be provided that fulfi ls the requirements
listed in 1.1 Intended Use and protects the blower from the
infl uences of the weather.
• Do not subject it to any vibration stress or impact force ei-
ther during the subsequent operation.
Permitted vibration values - blower: see ISO 14694, BV-3.
• Standard blowers with feet: securely screw the device to a
fi rm and level subsurface at the place of operation with suf-
fi cient load-bearing capacity and no vibration transmission/
stress.
• Standard blowers without feet:
Securely screw the device to a fi rm connection at the place
of operation with suffi cient load-bearing capacity and no vi-
bration transmission/stress. This is possible with S-MP
blowers with a suction and/or pressure side connection up
to the following models: maximum up to S-MP 345.
• Cover the open air intake and discharge with protective
grilles according to DIN EN ISO 13857.
• Installation of standard blowers with a vertical drive shaft
is possible with S-MP blowers up to the following models:
with Ex(e) motor: maximum up to S-MP 450/46-50/3,0
with Ex(d) motor: maximum up to S-MP 375
• Ensure that the motor has adequate ventilation.
Permitted ambient temperatures with:
Standard model with a rated voltage
(max. ±10% voltage tolerance) and a rated frequency of 50
Hz or 60 Hz.
• Ambient temperature -20°C to +40°C
Special voltages, models suitable for frequency converters:
• Ambient temperature -20°C to +40°C
• The drive motor ventilation system must not be affected by
the installation situation.

3.3 Electrical connection

Note!
The work described in this section may only be
performed by a qualifi ed electrician. The dimen-
sioning and selection of connecting lines, includ-
ing the connection of the motor, must be made
according to the circuit diagram in the junction
box and the relevant local regulations.
• Design of the electrical installations in accordance
with EN 60079-14.
• Complete equipotential bonding must be achieved; i.e.
suffi cient and proper earthing of all electrically conducting
parts.
• Check that the mains voltage matches the specifi cation
on the nameplate.
• The drive motors used are exclusively explosion-protected
three-phase current motors.
• The drive motor must be protected by a motor overload
switch (see notes under 1.8).
• The safety earth terminal can be found in the terminal box.
• For further information about EMC compliant installation
and assembly, refer to the operating and assembly inst-
ructions issued by the frequency converter manufacturer.
• A PTC-resistor sensor integrated in the motor indepen-
dently of the version must be connected and evaluated
corresponding to the specifi cations of the motor manufac-
turer.
• For special information on the FU, see 3.3.1 to 3.3.4
3.3.1 Special features when operating ATEX blowers at
the frequency converter
Note!
Only motors with pressure-proof encapsulation
must be operated at the frequency converter,
marked Ex de II2G(D) T4 135 °C!
For ATEX units suitable for frequency converter operation,
the temperature sensor (PTC-resistor sensor) built into the
motor must be connected to a monitoring device certifi ed for
ATEX applications and evaluated.
Only trip relays meeting the criteria set forth in IEC 61508,
and which are capable of assuming a safety position in case
of error (fail safe), are suitable.
Connect the output switch of the trip device to a suitable en-
able input of the converter, or perform other suitable meas-
ures ensuring that blower shut-off will meet the safety re-
quirements and allow manual reset only.
A direct evaluation of the PTC-resistor sensor by the fre-
quency converter is not usually permissible in ATEX applica-
tions (in this regard, please refer to the specifi cations of the
converter manufacturer!).
