8. Fault finding, causes and remedies

Fault
Pump does not run
Pump runs but does not pump
Pump does not pump evenly
Pressure is insufficient
Pump vibrates
Motor overheats,
motor cut-out activates
If the fault cannot be remedied, please contact your local plumbing
and heating specialist or WILO customer services.

Cause
no power
motor safety switch activated
wrong direction of rotation
the supply voltage of the motor is too low
pipe or pump components blocked by foreign body
air in inlet pressure gland
air in the pump
inlet pipe too narrow
the foot-valve is not immerged
inlet too high
wrong choice of pump
wrong direction of rotation
flow is too small, inlet pipe blocked
valve not sufficiently open
foreign body blocking the pump
foreign body in the pump
difficult rotation of the pump
bad electrical connection
pump not properly fixed to the base
base is not sufficiently heavy
insufficient voltage
pump sluggish:
foreign body
impellers obstruced
bearing damaged
ambient temperature too high
altitude ≥ 1000 m
the valve of the thermal relay (DM-Motor) is to low
a phase is cut
the thermal relay of the circuit-breaker is defective
the motor is defective

Remedy
check fuses, float switches and cables
eliminate motor overload
interchange two phases of the mains connection
check the voltage on the terminals of the motor
and the cross-section of the conductors and the
connection of the motor
check and clean pipe and pump
seal inlet pressure gland
fill the pump again
fit a larger inlet pie
immerse the foot-valve, ballast the flexible tube if
necessary
position the pump lower
fit a more powerful pump
interchange two phases of the mains connection
clean filter and inlet pipe
open valve
clean the pump
remove foreign body
check the pump turns freely without abnormal
sticking (motor is stopped)
check the connection to the pump motor
tighten anchor bolts
fit a heavier base
check voltage
clean pump
dismantle the pump and clean in
have pump repaired by customer services
provide cooling
pump is planed to operate at an altitude
put the valve of the current rating mentioned on the
motor data plate
check it and change the electrical cable if necessary
replace it
replace it by customer service
