— UM18-2 Pro sensors with switching outputs are IO-Link-capable

Sensors with switching outputs
Sensors that have a switching output offer three operating modes
(see process diagram A):
• Operation with one switching point (method A or method B)
Reset to the factory setting
The output is set when the object is located below the taught-in
switching point. In the teach-in procedure "Teach-in switching point
See process diagram C.
– method A", the sensor learns the actual distance to the object as
Maintenance
a switching point. In the teach-in procedure "Teach-in switching point
– method B", the sensor learns the distance to the object plus 8% as
SICK sensors are maintenance-free. We recommend that you clean
a switching point.
the boundary surfaces and check the threaded assemblies and
plugged connections at regular intervals.
• Window operation
The output is inactive when the object is located within the taught-in
1
window.
• Object between Sensor and Background (ObSB)
The output is set when the object is located between the sensor and
a fixed reflector. The object to be recorded may be in the area of
0 ... 85% of the taught-in distance.
1
Sensors with analog outputs
See process diagram B.
• Teach-in scaling (4 mA ... 20 mA/0 V ... 10 V)
— If the sensor-remote scaling limit is taught in before the scaling
limit on the sensor's side, the limits are exchanged internally.
— If scaling of less than 1 mm is taught in, both LEDs will flash
quickly together for 3 s to indicate an error. The old scaling limits
are maintained.
• Set output characteristics (rising/falling)
1
— While the green LED flashes, the output characteristics are
inverted at every application of "L+".
— If "L+" is not applied for 10 s, the set output characteristics are
actively and permanently stored. The sensor is operational.
Switching between teach-in and synchronization/multiplex mode
See process diagram C.
— If you want to operate several ultrasonic sensors and the assembly
distance indicated in table "Assembly distances" is undercut,
we recommend using the integrated synchronization or multiplex
mode.
— While the green LED flashes, the mode switches between teach-
in and synchronization/multiplex mode at every application of
"M". If "M" is not applied for 10 s, the set function is adopted.

The sensor is operational.

several interconnected sensors. The detection zone increases to the
area covered by all synchronized sensors via PIN 5 (MF). A maximum
2
of 20 sensors can be interconnected with the UM18-2 Pro.
— In synchronization mode, all sensors send and receive their

ultrasonic pulses simultaneously. Synchronization mode begins

— In multiplex mode, all sensors send and receive their ultrasonic

additional position detection of the recorded objects.
