1 Safety instructions

In order to ensure safe operation load cells may only be used as specified in these installation
instructions. If injury to persons and damage to property may result in the event of fracture, the user
must take appropriate safety measures (such as e.g. drop protection devices or overload protection
devices). This also applies to the use of accessories.
The load cells HLC... and BLC... can be used as machine elements (e.g. for container weighing).
Please note in such cases that, in order to achieve a high degree of measurement sensitivity, the load
cells have not been designed with all the usual safety factors that would normally be standard in
machine designs. Load cells are not safety elements within the meaning of specified and intended
use. Comply with all relevant accident prevention regulations and, in particular, take into
consideration the data for load limits as specified in Chapter 5 (Technical Specifications).
Proper and safe load cell operation presupposes competent transportation, correct storage, siting,
and fitting. Design your electronics for processing the measurement signals such that there will be no
consequential damage in the event of a measurement signal failure.

2 Mounting hints

Please pay attention on the following points for the mounting of load cells:
D Do not overload load cells, not even temporarily.
D The mounting surface must be horizontal, flat across the entire surface, and absolutely clean.
Dust, dirt, and other foreign matter should not collect such that they have a detrimental effect on
the mobility of load cells, thus falsifying the measured value.
D When mounting, or immediately after mounting, each load cell should be bridged by means of
a twisted copper cable (e.g. EEK... by HBM = approx. 16 mm
due to welding currents.
D Load cell grounding reduces the risk of load cell damage due to lightning.
Warning: Never load in a direction opposite to the load direction specified (see arrow on the load
introduction front of the load cell). This would cause measurement errors and the
damage of the mounting bolts.
If load direction is correct, the load cell output signal is positive.
