The interface EDS2 finishes its self test by showing "main menu", and then the channels
of amplifiers present are displayed. If there are amplifiers in slot 1 and 2, the display in
rows 1 and 2 shows the actuator name "X" ("Y"...), "ol" (open loop) and the actuator
voltage "-20.000 V". The rows 3...6 are blank because there are no amplifiers or actuators
connected. If the system includes the EDS1 without display, you can check the status
with the command "stat Enter" by using a terminal program via RS232.
Turn the potentiometer to the right until the display shows about 130 V. The actuator is in
the maximum position.
Turn the potentiometer to the left till the display shows about -20 V. The actuator is in the
minimum position.
Switch on closed loop by pressing on the potentiometer. The "OL/CL" LED will shine
yellow. On the EDS2 the display will change from "op" to "cl" and "-20.000 V" to "0 μm".
Turn the potentiometer to the right until the maximum position is reached and the actuator
does its maximum closed loop movement.
Turn the potentiometer to the left until the minimum position (0 µm) is reached and switch
off the closed loop.
Do this procedure with all connected actuators.
Switch off the power supply by pressing the POWER button on the EDS2 longer than
2 seconds.
If the system is switched off a long time (longer then 1 day), please switch off the switch
on the back side of the system.
The function check is complete.
If there were errors during the procedure, read the troubleshooting chapter.
8 how to operate the digital system d-Drive®

8.1 common introduction

The new digital generation of piezo controllers of piezosystem jena, d-Drive®, combines the
highest positioning accuracy with a unique handling comfort. This means that a PC can control all
features and the main functions can be directly handled by the front panel. It was specially
developed for multichannel functions. With the fast Digital Signal Processor (DSP) many functions
are possible. We also implemented adjustable features, such as slew rate, notch filter and low
pass filter. A built-in function generator offers sine, triangular, and square functions, as well as
noise and sweep. The actuators are separable and exchangeable, due to integrated ID-
information. The actuator type, linearity optimization, and PID-settings are stored on an ID-chip in
the actuator's plug. The calibration is done with an integrated pre-amplifier.
All these functions and the 20-bit resolution with 50 kSPS (50 kHz sampling rate) make the
d-Drive® an excellent choice for nanopositioning and scanning applications, including scanning
microscopy, metrology, surface profiling, cell tracking, nanotechnology, and many other
applications.
The expandable system includes the system housing with an integrated wide range power supply
in two power levels, a data exchange module with or without display, and 1 to 6 amplifier channels
with digital controllers at different levels of power depending on the application.
