EXPLANATION OF SOME MODEL AIRCRAFT EXPRESSIONS

Skydreamer
The
model and it may therefore be useful to understand
some of the technical expressions used in this
hobby. Some of these terms and their meanings
are detailed as follows in alphabetical order.
Accumulator:
Rechargeable storage unit for
electrical energy commonly referred to as a
rechargeable battery. For model airplanes Nickel-
Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and
Lithium Polymer batteries (Lipo) are used. The
stored energy is measured in Milli-Ampere-Hours
(mAh). A battery with 950mAh is able to discharge
a current of 10A for 5 minutes. To operate the
motor of an airplane the battery must be able to
discharge heavy current; within a few minutes it
transmits its energy with the aid of the speed
controller to the motor. Accumulators / batteries
can be charged depending on their specification
several hundred times. Make sure to use only the
charger which is suitable for your type of battery.
Worn out or defective batteries (hazardous) must
be disposed in an approved manner.

Aileron:
An airplane turns rather like a
motorcycle, with aerodynamic and gravitational
forces playing an important factor. The sideways
pitch of a conventional aircraft is achieved by
moving the flaps or ailerons on the wing. On the
Skydreamer
the separate control surfaces
of the optional ailerons are operated in the
opposite direction.
The flaps are not operational

condition. Spiralling is caused by the V-shape of
the wings after the tail fin has been put on. By
fitting ailerons to the wings you will be able to
perform tighter curves and rolls (aerobatics).
Battery / dry cell:
Dry cells like Alkaline
batteries are disposable power sources. With the
Skydreamer
dry cells can be used for the
operation of the transmitter. At the end of its
lifetime the voltage of a battery decreases and

with any charger; which may result in fire or
explosion.
BEC Battery Eliminating Circuit:
is a circuit for electric powered models where a
separate power source for the receiver is not
required. The receiver is supplied with current from
the flight battery. The voltage is controlled by a
special device to a specific value.
Centre of gravity:
The centre of gravity is the
central point at which the forward and rear sections
of the aircraft can be balanced. In an airplane the
position of the centre of gravity in relation to lift,
plays an important role.
Crystal:
Radio control units for models can only
transmit within limited ranges of frequencies and
they may be different from country to country.
These ranges are divided into channels (each with
a minimum distance in frequency). The accepted
method is with a matched pair of crystals for
transmitter and receiver, transmitting on an
identical frequency. Only one model may be
operated on one channel at a time. The crystals
are easily interchangeable if conflicts of
frequencies exist.

current. The design of motors and batteries which
can use high powered flying with electric
aeroplanes has now been achieved. Motors and
batteries become hot during the flight. Let them
cool down before recharging and before the next
flight.
Elevator:
The elevator of an airplane in a normal
design is similar to a small wing at the tail of the
plane with a moveable flap at its end. By moving
this control surface up or down the lifting forces at
the elevator are altered; the tail of the plane is
dropped or lifted, resulting in ascent or descent of
the airplane.
