2.1.6 Tasks of the Automatic Transfer Switch
ƒ Separation of the active conductors of the power storage system
ƒ In case of power failure: Construction of an island grid for the consumer circuits, connected to the X3 - "Backup-supply" connection.
• Contacting of the AC connection of the power storage system with the connection X3 - "Backup supply"
• Connection of the neutral conductor of the power storage system or the connection „Backup supply" with the protective
earth connection for establishment of the protective measure "Automatic shutdown of the power supply in the TN-System"
according to DIN VDE 0100-410
The total load of the load circuits at the connection X3 – „Backup supply" in backup operation should not be higher than the
maximum power that the used power storage system Vitocharge VX3, Type 4.6A can provide when the power is removed from the
integrated storage.
2.1.7 Operation of the Automatic Transfer Switch
The Automatic Transfer Switch communicates with regard to the grid switching by means of digital in- and outputs with the power
storage system.
The all-pole disconnection of the supply grid from the backup power consumers and the simultaneous switching from mains to backup
power operation takes place automatically in case of power failure due to the omission of the supply voltage of the contactor coil of the
mains contactor K1 and in case of undervoltage of the supply mains via the digital output of the Vitocharge..
The power storage system detects the power failure and automatically activates the island grid operation after a few seconds.
ƒ -During mains parallel operation, the mains contactor K1 is tightened and connects the power storage system and the connection
"Backup-supply" to the grid.
ƒ When the mains fails, the mains contactor K1 drops off automatically or is switched off via the digital output of the Vitocharge.
By evaluating an NC auxiliary contact of K1 at the digital input of the power storage system, the system receives the information
about the state of change of K1.
ƒ The mains contactor K1 disconnects for one thing the grid all-pole by its now opened NO-contacts (closer), and then again
by means of the now closed NC-contacts (opener) of K1 a grounding of the neutral conductor of the island grid is carried out
immediately after the grid disconnection.
ƒ Before the shift to island grid operation, the digital output executed as opener is activated in the power storage system in order to
prevent the mains contactor K1 from immediately tightening again when the grid has returned.
ƒ The power storage system then establishes the island grid and remains in island grid operation until the grid supply returns. The
consumers connected to the "Backup-supply" connection are supplied with backup power during this time.
ƒ The power storage system detects the return of the grid supply by means of an appropriate information provided by the energy
meter. The island grid operation is then terminated and then the mains contactor K1 is tightened again by deactivating the digital
output. From this moment on, the consumers and if necessary producers connected to the connection "Backup-supply" are re-
connected to the grid.
The power storage system Vitocharge VX3, Type 4.6A is based on a 1-phase inverter, which can provide backup power. Therefore,
only consumers operating at the same grid phase as the power storage system, can be supplied during the backup power mode.
