1 Introduction
The IML Spider charging system is intended, among other uses, for electrostatic charging of
labels in injection moulding (mould labelling). The IML Spider charging electrodes are fitted in a
dummy core which places the labels in the mould. The system is connected to a type CMM
Easy or type CM Lite IML charging generator providing high voltage for the charging system.
Due to the slim electrodes that can be guided, labels can be charged in specific areas, allowing
them to stick to the metal mould. Thanks to the modular design with plug connections, the
system can easily be converted for use with a variable number of dummy cores. The IML Spider
charging system is fitted with IML Spider charging electrodes, but the components of the
charging system can also be used for customer specific electrodes, IML foam or Easy Core.
2 Description and function
See Figure 1, IML Spider charging system
The IML Spider charging system is always connected to a high voltage supply generator. It is
connected to the generator using a connecting cable (A) to a CM Lite IML, or using a Head
(C/D/E) to the CMM Easy. There should always be a Junction Block (B) or an IML Spider (F)
connected to the connecting cable (A). Depending on the application an electrode (I/J/K) can be
directly connected to an IML Spider Head (E), or a connecting cable (H) can be attached to a
Junction Block Head (C/D) first, connecting the IML Spider (F). The output of a Junction Block
(ø6) has a direct connection to the high voltage; the output of an IML Spider (ø4) has a resistive
connection to the high voltage. At the end of an IML Spider charging system there are one or
more IML Spider electrodes (I/K), fitted into an IML dummy core. A customer specific IML
electrode, IML foam or Easy Core can also be connected using a connection cable (G/J)
instead of the IML Spider electrode. In order to fix the labels to the mould wall the separate high
voltage generator supplies the IML Spider electrode with a short pulse. To prevent damage to
the mould as well as technical failures, all of the outputs of the IML Spider and the IML Spider
Head have been fitted with serial resistance. IML electrodes or IML foam are always connected
to an IML Spider or an IML Spider Head with an ø4 mm output fitted with serial resistance.
Depending on the construction an Easy Core dummy core can be connected to a Junction
Block with a direct connection using an ø6 mm output.
