To determine the density of liquids:

Unpacking the Glass Plummet
!
Caution: Do not bend the wire on the glass
plummet, as the wire might break. Pull the glass
plummet out of the packaging by the glass loop
to which the wire is attached.
Installing the Glass Plummet
§
Loop the wire on the plummet over the metal hook
on the retainer.
Thermometer
§
If necessary, attach the thermometer to the rim
of the beaker using the retainer clip.

The thermometer contains mercury and is
state-of-the-art.

Thermometers containing mercury can be dangerous
if the thermometer breaks and the mercury escapes.
The mercury must never be cleaned up using a vacu-
um cleaner. It should be carefully wiped up with a
cloth. The cloth and mercury must then be placed in
a lockable container and disposed of as hazardous
waste (in Germany as Hg waste, AVV060404, solid
mercury-containing waste). Old thermometers which
are no longer functioning must also be disposed of
in this way.
