The function of the heat and moisture exchanger will be sub-
stantially reduced if the calcium chloride is washed out of the
foam. Also, the risk of potential infections may increase with
the time of use, due to bacterial colonization in the foam.
Check the proper function of the spring mechanism in the HME
Cassette prior to use.
Insert the HME Cassette. The HME Cassette can easily be inserted
and removed manually from the adhesive as needed. Fig. 3
Closing the tracheostoma for voicing
In order to obtain an airtight seal for speech with a voice prosthesis
or surgical speech fistula, press the top lid of the HME Cassette
down with a finger. Fig. 2
You can also close the stoma, if a pressure increase of the air
in the lungs is needed (e.g. coughing).
The HME Cassette can be removed during or after coughing if
the stoma needs to be cleaned from mucus. Generally, the Adhe-
sive base plate can stay in place during cleaning of the stoma or
Cassette replacement.
Replacement of the HME Cassette
The Cassette can be replaced as needed. To ensure its proper
function, the same Cassette should not be used for more than
24 hours.
Store in a clean, dry and dark area at room temperature
(15°C–25°C/60F–80F).
