About this guide
This guide provides important information for the installa-
tion and connection of the ultrasonic sensor of type
BFD 3SAP-19N000-U01-LA2-... with analog current and
voltage interface and with IO-Link interface.

Intended use
The ultrasonic sensors form a measuring system together
with a machine controller (e.g. PLC) and are intended for
use in the industrial sector. They can be used for conti-
nuous position sensing of hydraulic cylinders (e.g. swing
clamps, lever clamps, vertical clamps, block cylinders and
directional control valves).
Proper function according to the specifications in the
technical data is only assured when the product is used
solely as described in the user's guide and the respective
documents as well as in compliance with the technical
specifications and requirements and only with suitable
original Balluff accessories.
Otherwise, there is deemed to be unintended use.
Unintended use is not permitted and will result in the loss
of warranty and liability claims against the manufacturer.
Reasonably foreseeable misuse
The product is not intended for the following applications
and areas and may not be used there:

In safety-oriented applications in which personal safety
depends on the device function
–
In explosive atmospheres
–
In food applications
Construction and Function
The transducer of the ultrasonic distance sensor generates
an ultrasonic pulse that is coupled into the hydraulic fluid of
a hydraulic cylinder. The pulse propagates in the cylinder
as a pressure wave in the axial direction and is reflected by
the piston. The reflection is received by the transducer and
converted into an electrical signal. The position of the
piston and thus of the system component (e.g. the position
of the swing clamp) is determined from the running time of
the shaft.
The sensor measures in contact with the medium and
compensates for environmental influences (type and
composition of the fluid, temperature, pressure).

Safety notes
Activities such as installation, connection and startup
may only be carried out by qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel are persons whose technical
training, knowledge and experience as well as knowledge
of the relevant regulations allows them to assess the work
assigned to them, recognize possible hazards and take
appropriate safety measures.
The operator is responsible for ensuring that local safety
regulations are observed.
In particular, the operator must take steps to ensure that a
defect in the product will not result in hazards to persons
or equipment.
The product must not be opened, modified or changed. If
defects and unresolvable faults occur in the product, take
it out of service and secure against unauthorized use.
The product may only be used when properly
installed (in a cylinder, etc.).
Sealing ring
A sealing ring that is no longer fully functional can cause
damage and serious injury from hydraulic oil spraying out
in a pressurized hydraulic system.
Contact substances (hydraulic oil, cleaning agents, etc.)
must pass a compatibility test before use.
UV light can damage the sealing ring. Protect product from
UV radiation.
