Installation
Checking the voltage
Before connecting the set to the mains supply check that the
preset operating voltage, visible through the opening of the
voltage adapter 69 at the rear is that of your local mains. If it is
not, turn the adapter until the correct value appears.
Note: Never turn the adapter whilst the apparatus is connected
to the mains.
Note (U.K. only): When fitting a mains plug to the mains lead,
please proceed as follows:
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with
the following code:
Blue - Neutral
Brown - Live
As these colours may not correspond with the colour markings
identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows:
The Brown wire must be connected to the terminal which is
marked with the letter L or coloured Red.
The Blue wire must be connected to the terminal which is
marked with the letter N or coloured Black.
Note: This apparatus must be protected by a 3 amp Fuse ifa13
amp plug is used or if any other type of plug is used by a5 amp
Fuse either in the plug or adaptor or at the distribution board. If
in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
Transport safeguards
The sub-chassis - the independently suspended unit consist-
ing of the turntable and pick-up arm
- is locked with three
swivels and a labelled transport screw
to protect it against'
shocks during transport. These
must be unlocked
after the
record player has been put in position but before fitting the
turntable.
,
To do this, remove the labelled screw and turn the three lock-
ing swivels anti-clockwise until they move freely in the slots.
Remove packing materials and all other protective material, if
any. Don't forget to remove
the red coloured
plastic safety
locking, mounted
on the pick-up arm bearing by moving its
levers in direction indicated by the arrows.
N.B.: Don't forget to lock the sub-chassis again if the set has to
be transported, by turning the swivels clockwise as far as they
will go.
Assembly
Turntable, counterweight and adapter for 45 r.p.m. records are
packed separately. Place the decorative ring, fixed onto the
rear side of the turntable during transport, in the recess of the
rubber turntable mat.
Mount the turntable over the spindle and screw counterweight
@ in position as indicated in fig. 4, onto the end of the pick-up
arm until it comes up against the pick-up arm bearing.
Mount the dust cover.
Stylus-force adjustment
The stylus force is the downward force the stylus exerts on the
record. Each type of cartridge has an optimum stylus force,
which is given in the technical data for the cartridge.
For the Super M Iicartridge GP 4001, this optimum stylus force
is 2 gf. It is of the utmost
importance
that the stylus force
should be accurately adjusted to the recommended value, as
too high or too low stylus force can lead to poor sound quality
and damage to your records. Adjust the stylus force as follows:
e Turn side-thrust compensation adjustment ang @) to '0'.
@ Set lift clever 6 to'v'
e@ Free the pick-up arm by turning lock @ to the right.
e@ Support the pick-up arm over the arm rest with one hand.
Turn counter-weight 6) clockwise with the other hand, until the
pointer of stylus force indicator @ gives the desired reading
when the pick-up arm is laid down on the rest. For cartridge GP
400 [this reading should be '2'.
@ Set lift switch @ back to 'OFF'.
Side-thrust compensation
Side thrust is the force generated by the friction of the stylus
against the groove wall, which tends to press the stylus more
strongly against the inner groove surface. This leads to imper-
fect tracking and thus distortion. The side thrust depends not
only on the stylus force but also on the shape of the stylus
(spherical, bi-radial or CD4 stylus). in order to compensate for
the side thrust, this player is designed so that a well defined
force equal and opposite to the side thrust can be exerted on
the pick-up arm.
Adjust the side thrust compensation by fupning ring 6 until the
mark on the ring is opposite the same number as that of the
stylus force setting. For cartridge GP 400 I, which has a spher-
ical stylus, this is '2' on the white scale. For cartridges with a
bi-radial stylus (e.g. GP 422 I), the green scale must be used.
