The K.W.St.E started its service with locomotives with the axle
sequence 2B, i.e. with a front bogie and two drive axles, and almost
exclusively purchased machines of this type between 1845 and 1865.
However, due to a new chief mechanic and his ideas, other types
took preference. When K.W.St.E needed a new express train
locomotive just before the turn of the century, the two-coupler with
the front bogie was once again selected. By now, this construction
type had generally established itself. The Maschinenfabrik Esslingen,
the main supplier to K.W.St.E., supplied the first five machines of the
class AD in 1899. The locomotives, with the typical connection pipe
between the domes, had traction wheels with a diameter of 1800 mm
which allowed a top speed of 100 km/h. On the flat, they could pull a
train weight of 150 tonnes at top speed. The low maximum axle load
of only 14 tonnes allowed this locomotive to be used freely on all
Württemberg routes. The machines were equipped with the two-axle
standard tender with 10 cubic meter of water. In various construction
series, which differed from each other, a total of 98 locomotives were
supplied by 1907. Actually, 100 units were planned, but the two last
locomotives were equipped with an over-heater and supplied as hot
steam locomotives of the class ADh.
This technology seemed to prove its worth, and a further 15 hot steam
locomotives followed until 1909. In the meantime, the weight of the
express rains had increased so much that they could hardly be
transported anymore with the light 2B locomotives. A test was
conducted in which a wet steam locomotive, the 1506, was equipped
with an over-heater. Although this improved the performance of the
locomotive, no further locomotives were retrofitted as these were
due to be taken out of service shortly. The last Württemberg express
train locomotives AD and ADh remained in service until 1932.
