down the whole surface. If you want you can paint the exterior of the hull cream. Stain or paint the rubbing strakes before fitting
them in place. These are attached 5 mm above the first strip of lining.
PHOTO 125: Using a saw cut the hull free of the base flush with the lining.
PHOTO 126: Cut the bottom planking to size and glue it in place using quick-drying glue. The frames must be cut 4 mm from
the top. Stained lengths of strip are fitted between each frame, to simulate more frames
PHOTO 127: Cut the thwarts to size and glue them in place at intervals as shown in the photo. Retouch the bow and stern
thwarts if required and fit them in place.
PHOTO 128: Glue the stem into place at the bow. The keel and the stern post are made up using a strip.
PHOTO 129: Glue the reinforcement to the stern transom and paint it brown. The interior must be panted white. The limber
board will cover the whole profile of the hull lining strips. Glue the thwart reinforcements onto the thwarts.
Cut out the oarlock bases and give them a slight bevel. Make the necessary holes for fitting the oarlocks (pins "A"). Varnish the
whole assembly except for those areas that you have painted.
PHOTOS 130 & 131: Glue the side fairleader onto the stern thwart. Using a brass shaft attach the sheave. Glue the rudder and
its helm. Place the barge on the supports provided for that end and tie it down with the lashings as shown.
PHOTO 132: Retouch the stem, or the interior of the figurehead if necessary so that it is fitted into place as shown in the image.
From these photos on we show you various construction details that might serve as a guide for fitting the different parts of the
hull, masts and spars and the rigging.
MASTS AND SPARS
In order to make up the masts the first step is to cut the rods to size, as indicated in the parts list, or by taking measurements
directly from plans 3, 4, 5 & 6, which are printed in 1/1 scale.
All of the masts and yards have to have a certain conical shape, which you must give by progressively sanding them down.
In order to achieve this conical shape for the masts, sand down the rod (using a sander), sanding down more as you get closer
to the top end, where you want to decrease the diameter. Roll the rod so that you sand it down evenly on all sides, until you
have achieved the diameter indicated in the plan.
In order to achieve this conical shape for the yards carry out the same operations as above but sanding down from both ends of
the rods.
Because of the dimension sof this model we have drawn up vertical section plan no. 1 in two halves. Cut along the line indicated
and then glue it to the other half.
In order to make up the mast for this model correctly you must take the following into account:
-
Plans Nos
-
The close up photos of the masts
-
The measurements and description of the materials given in the parts list
The "IP" Parts Identification sheets
-
The mast must be varnished and some of the parts that make them up will have to be painted. See general and close up photos
of the masts.
Once the mast has been assembled and varnished attach the tackle (slings, blocks, eyebolts, clump blocks, etc.) and attach
them to the ship. The mast must be inserted until it comes up against the mast step in the false keel.
SAILS AND RIGGING
In order to make up the running gear for this ship follow the alphabetic order of the figures printed in plans 7 & 8, indicating the
order for fitting the ropes, clump blocks, blocks, sails, etc., highlighted in red. In combination with the parts list this will serve as
a guide with regard to the type of material to be used. To simulate the aging of the sails you can boil them in tea and leave them
to dry all wrinkled up. Fit them in place without ironing so that they have body.
