We experience the world first through our senses. Even when we are unable to isolate the workings of sight, smell,
taste, touch, and hearing, each allows us to comprehend our surroundings, forming a powerful register that invests
every moment with meaning. Think of a baby seeing its mother's face for the first time, a child's joy at hearing and
then seeing a plane flying overhead, or the simple pleasure of tasting a well-prepared meal. Indeed, we use our
senses before we can explain how they work. The five senses are typically taught in early education (preschool
and kindergarten) to help students fully grasp this intuitive knowledge. This set includes tools to stimulate each of
the senses, helping students learn through play and discovery. Explore this wonderful world—sometimes sweet,
occasionally sour, but always enlightening!
Before teaching each of the five senses, explain to children which part of the body it involves and its purpose. For
example, when teaching the sight activities, have children identify where their eyes are, and talk about things you can
see. Do this for each of the senses as you perform the activities below.
Important note: Check student medical information for food allergies, dietary restrictions, or asthma triggers prior to
any experiment, and adjust or eliminate activities that can be a risk to sensitive students.

Sensory Tubes
• Make a "find it" tube. Fill a tube with both rice and small objects, or small plastic letters, and cap with solid lids. Turn
the tube to try and find objects and letters.
• Add colored water and cooking oil to a tube, and cap with solid lids. What happens?
• Place layer after layer of various sand colors in a tube, and cap with solid lids. Identify each of the colors.
• Place several objects in a solid-capped tube. Have the student turn the tube to look at all the objects. Have the
student turn around while you remove one object. Ask the student to look again at the objects in the tube. Can he or
she identify which object is missing?
Kaleidoscope
• Add different combinations of the colored plastic chips to the kaleidoscope. Twist the kaleidoscope.
Name the colors you see. Do the colors mix to make new colors?
• How does the picture in the kaleidoscope look when you tilt it
toward the sky? Toward the ground?
• Discuss symmetry and lines of symmetry. Place the colored chips in
the kaleidoscope and turn it to see how one side of a shape is a
reflection of another side.
• Add small objects to the kaleidoscope (coins, grass, and small buttons
work well) to expand your perspective.
