ADJUST PAD ENGAGEMENT POINT
(ELIXIR 9/CODE)
Use the tapered barrel to adjust the pad engagement point exactly where
you want it. Turning the tapered barrel opposite the direction of the arrow
on the barrel decreases the amount of lever travel necessary for the pads
to contact the rotor, resulting in quicker pad engagement. Experiment and
see what the different settings feel like. The goal is for your brake pads to
engage right where your grip on the lever feels the strongest.
Note: The tapered barrel can turn 24 "clicks" or about 2 complete
revolutions.
BEFORE YOU RIDE
Check that the bars turn freely. If there is excess hose in this area,
see the instructions on changing hose lengths and bleeding the
system located in the Avid Hydraulic Disc Brake Hose Length
Adjustment & Bleed Guide.

PAD REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE THE WHEEL
Start by removing the wheel and checking the rotor thickness. If
the rotor thickness is less than 1.55 mm, replace it with a new
rotor.
2. PUSH THE PISTONS BACK IN
Elixir calipers are self-adjusting. The pistons need to be pushed
back into the body to their original position before the new pads
can be installed. The safest way to do this is with the old pads still
in the caliper to protect the pistons. Place a fl at-blade screwdriver
between the old pads, then carefully rock it back and forth,
pushing the pistons back into their bores.
3. REMOVE PAD RETAINER BOLT
Remove the "E" clip on the wheel side of the caliper, then unscrew
the retainer bolt using a 2.5 mm hex wrench. Remove the retainer
bolt all the way.
4. REMOVE THE OLD PADS
Grab the pad tabs and pull straight out.
5. INSTALL THE NEW PADS AND SPREADER
Be sure the spreader clip is oriented to the pads as shown.
Align the hole in the spreader clip with the holes in the pad tabs.
Squeeze the pad and clip assembly together, then insert into the
caliper as a unit. Firmly push until the assembly is seated into
place.
6. RE-INSTALL PAD RETAINER BOLT
Replace the pad retainer bolt, tighten to 0.9-1.0 N•m (8-9.5 in-lb),
and replace the "E" clip on the wheel side of the caliper.
7. RE-INSTALL THE WHEEL
Guide the rotor in between the pads as you re-install the wheel.
Once the wheel is secured, squeeze the brake lever a few times
to advance the pads to their resting positions. Spin the wheel and
check for rotor drag. Re-align the caliper as necessary.
