Owner's Guide
An essential part of your
infection control system
Congratulations on your purchase of a BioSonic
Cleaner — the finest, most efficient cleaning system in dentistry.
Developed specifically for the dental industry, BioSonic units
feature unique product design and optimize time and safety in the
office or laboratory.
BioSonic is a complete ultrasonic cleaning system, with a full line
of cleaning solutions and unit accessories, which provides you with
the flexibility to efficiently clean instruments, prostheses and other
appliances.
What is Ultrasonic Cleaning?
Ultrasonic Cleaning is a process created by high frequency
sound waves. The sound waves, enhanced by specially formulated
cleaning solutions, create high energy cavitation. During cavitation,
millions of tiny bubbles form and then collapse or "implode,"
releasing enormous amounts of energy and shock waves which
scour the surface of instruments, appliances and other devices
placed in the cleaning solution. This powerful scouring action
reaches into minute crevices, which manual brushing cannot
reach. The combination of energy and specially formulated
solutions make ultrasonic cleaning the most effective method for
removing gross and microscopic debris.
I. Unpacking
1. Remove your BioSonic unit from the shipping carton and
inspect the unit for any possible damage which may have
occurred during shipping.
2. Compare the serial number of the unit (found on either the
underside or rear of the unit) with the number on the shipping
carton. If they are not the same, contact your dealer.
3. Fill out the warranty card and mail to Coltène/Whaledent within
10 days of receipt.
4. Select your desired location for the cleaner. It should be in
close proximity to a sink or waste lines to facilitate draining of
soiled solution.
II. Operating Instructions
A. General Cleaning
1. Plug the power cord into the power cord receptacle on the
back of the unit, then plug the cord into a three-wire grounded
AC outlet (in accordance with local regulations).
2. Fill the unit with water to the "fill" line indicator (Fig 1).
3. Pour the required amount of ultrasonic cleaning solution (either
BioSonic General Purpose, BioSonic Germicidal or BioSonic
Enzymatic Ultrasonic Cleaner) into the tank.

4. To activate the unit, depress the keypad for the selected
cleaning time. Unit will automatically shut off at the end of the
cycle. To cancel the cycle at any time, press "OFF."
5. Change the solution in the tank daily, or sooner if it appears
soiled or discolored. When beakers are used, change the solu-
tion in the beaker after each use.

6. Empty the unit by tilting it over a sink (Fig. 2). Make sure the
solution pours out of the tank over the indicator arrow (Fig. 3).
B. Degassing
Degassing the ultrasonic solution is an important step. Degassing
is the removal of air bubbles found in all fresh solution. These
bubbles act as a barrier to efficient cleaning.
Degassing is necessary every time new solution is added.
Degas the solution by activating the unit for 15 minutes before you
add any items to be cleaned.
C. Cover
The BioSonic Ultrasonic Cleaner should always be covered when
operating to trap aerosols in the unit. The BioSonic UC50DB is
equipped with a "hinged" cover for easy one hand opening. The
cover also conveniently lifts off for cleaning or for use in spaces
with low cabinets above the unit.
D. Instrument Draining
The design of the UC50DB directs condensation back into the
tank, keeping the work area around the unit dry. The housing acts
as a draining stand for the basket. Simply position the basket on
the bezel of the tank (Fig. 4) and allow the solution to drain off
instruments.
III. Cleaning Methods
A. In Tank
Basket Cleaning: Place parts to be cleaned into the basket
(Fig 5). Then place the basket directly into the main tank
containing BioSonic General Purpose, Germicidal or Enzymatic
Ultrasonic Cleaner. Clean according to instructions on bottle label.
B. In Beaker
For Specialized Item Cleaning (e.g., prostheses): Place item
into a beaker, add desired cleaning solution (e.g., BioSonic
Cement Remover) according to the product's directions. Suspend
the beaker in the tank by the use of the beaker holder and place
the beaker positioning ring around the beaker so that the bottom
2/3 of the beaker is suspended in the main bath.
IV. Accessory Use Directions
A. Instrument Basket
BioSonic UC58 Instrument Basket increases instrument processing
efficiency and prevents instruments from damaging the tank.
U U s s e e D D i i r r e e c c t t i i o o n n s s : : Place instruments across ridges in bottom of
basket (Fig. 6). Place basket in tank and clean for desired time.
After cleaning, rinse basket and instruments thoroughly under
running water. After rinsing, the basket may be placed on the
housing for draining (Fig. 4).
B. Beaker Holder
Place two UC153 Beaker Holders on the housing. Place beaker
positioning rings around the beaker so that at least 2/3 of the
beaker is suspended in the main bath (Fig. 7). Clean for desired
time.
