SPICE Controls
(EN) Step 2: Controls
TOP PANEL – SYNTHESIZER SECTION
Controls 1-10 affect VCO 1; 11-20 VCO 2.
1. & 11. – FREQUENCY – use these controls to tune the VCOs.
The range is 8.176 Hz to 8372 Hz.
2. & 12. – SHAPE – use this three-way switch to select the VCO
shape. Choose between square, square (VCO) & sawtooth
(sub-oscillators) or sawtooth.
3. & 13. – SUB 1 FREQ – use this control to select the frequency
of the first sub-oscillator. When the control is fully
clockwise the sub frequency is in unison with the main VCO
frequency, turning it anti-clockwise steps down through
the sub-harmonics. These are generated by dividing the
original frequency by integers, so may not always be exact
notes, and may go sub-sonic when the VCO is tuned to a
low frequency.
4. & 14. – SUB 2 FREQ – this control works in the same way as
3 & 13, but for the second sub-oscillator.
5. & 15. – VCO LEVEL – use this control to adjust the VCO level.
6. & 16. – SUB 1 LEVEL – use this control to adjust the sub 1 level.
7. & 17. – SUB 2 LEVEL – use this control to adjust the sub 2 level.
8. & 18. – OSC SEQUENCE ASSIGN – use these buttons to assign
sequence 1 to VCO 1 pitch and sequence 2 to VCO 2 pitch.
9. & 19. – SUB 1 ASSIGN – use these buttons to assign the
sequences to controlling the harmonic relationships
between sub 1 and its VCO. Over-rides controls 3 & 13.
10. & 20. – SUB 2 ASSIGN – use these buttons to assign the
sequences to controlling the harmonic relationships
between sub 2 and its VCO. Over-rides controls 4 & 14.
21.
CUTOFF – use this control to adjust the cutoff frequency of
the 24 dB/octave VCF. Range is 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
22.
RESONANCE – use this control to emphasize the
frequencies around the cutoff frequency. At high levels this
will cause the VCF to self-oscillate.
VCA ATTACK – use this control to adjust the time taken for
23.
the sound to reach maximum level while a gate or trigger is
present. Range is 1 ms to 10 s.
24.
VCA DECAY – use this control to adjust the time taken
for the sound to decay to minimum. This control works
differently for gates and triggers. A gate will hold
the sound at maximum level until removed when the
sound will decay; a trigger will go from attack to decay
immediately. Range is 5 ms to 10 s.
VCA VOLUME – use this control to set the maximum level
25.
that a sound can reach.
26.
VCF ATTACK – use this control to adjust the attack time of
VCF cutoff modulation. Range is 1 ms to 10 s.
27.
VCF DECAY – use this control to adjust the decay time of
VCF cutoff modulation. Gates and triggers work in the
same way as with VCA Decay. Range is 5 ms to 10 s.
28.
AMOUNT – use this control to adjust the amount of
envelope generator modulation applied to the VCF.
TOP PANEL – SEQUENCER SECTION
29.
TEMPO – use this control to set the master tempo of the
internal clock. Range is 20 bpm to 3000 bpm.
30.
RESET – use this button to reset the sequencers to their
initial step.
31.
EG – this button has three settings: OFF (LED unlit) –
sequencer steps do not trigger the envelope generators;
ON (LED lit) – sequencer steps trigger the EGs; HELD
(LED blinks) – EGs are held at the maximum level until
button is pressed again. Hold the button for 2 seconds to
enter HELD mode. Hold again for 2 seconds to release.
NEXT – use this button to force the sequencers to advance
32.
to their next step. Does not re-trigger the EGs.
33.
PLAY/STOP – use this button to start and stop the
sequencers. Will not have any effect if none of the buttons
45 – 52 (see below) are selected.
34.
TRIGGER – use this button to manually trigger the EGs
when button 31 is ON.
35.
SEQ OCT – use this button to set the octave range of the
sequencers. Cycle through +/- 1 octave, +/- 2 octave or
+/- 5 octave. Each sequence will use the selected range
above and below the frequency set by controls 1 & 11.
Range selected is indicated by the LEDs above the button.
36.
QUANTIZE – use this button to set the quantization range
of the VCOs:
• • Off (LEDs unlit) – no quantization.
• • 8 JI – quantization to 8 note diatonic just
intonation scale.
• • 12 JI – quantization to 12 note chromatic just
intonation scale.
• • 8 ET – quantization to 8 note diatonic equal
temperament scale.
• • 12 ET – quantization to the 12 note chromatic equal
temperament scale most often used in western music.
37.-40. – SEQUENCER 1 STEPS 1-4 – use these controls to set the
note and/or sub relationship for sequencer 1 controlling
VCO 1 according to the settings of buttons 8-10 and
quantization. At 12 o'clock the frequency is the same
as that set by control 1. Moving clockwise increases the
frequency; anti-clockwise decreases it.
41.-44.– SEQUENCER 2 STEPS 1-4 – as 37-40, but affecting
VCO 2.
45., 49. & 53. – use control 53 to set a clock division for the
sequencers. Range is from no division when the control is
fully clockwise to divided by 16 when fully anti-clockwise.
Apply to sequencer 1 with button 45 and/or sequencer 2
with button 49. This can be used to generate polyrhythms.
46., 50. & 54. – as 45, 49 & 53.
47., 51. & 55. – as 45, 49 & 53.
48., 52. & 56. – as 45, 49 & 53.
TOP PANEL – PATCHBAY
