Fore arm rests
to
(optional feature)
The fore arm rests are a useful option for help-
ing patients with symptoms of paralysis,
hypertonia, muscle spasms or lack of hand/
arm mobility to obtain a secure hold.
N
Apart from fore arm rest
all fore arm rests
can and should be individually adjusted. Com-
binations of fore arm rest are also possible, as
is the use of only one armrest. Adjustment by
a doctor or therapist is essential. Elastic Vel-
cro straps allow the forearms to be secured in
the fore arm rests.
You can either:
place the arm in the fore arm rests after the
fore arm rests has been attached to the up-
per torso trainer
or
fix the fore arm rest to the arm first and then
slide the fore arm rest onto the spindle on
the crank.

Wristband (optional feature)

If the patient's hand is paralysed, the wrist-
band allows it to be quickly and easily secured
to the safety handle 2, exerciser handle 14 or
special Tetra-handle 28.

Heart rate sensor

U
Opto heart rate sensor with ear clip
(Ear clip for pulse measurement)
The THERA-vital is supplied as standard with
an ear clip for pulse measurement. The ear
clip is used to monitor the heart rate (see
page 56, „Pulse limit"). Due to insufficient ac-
curacy, the ear clip must not be used to mon-
itor the pulse limit for patients with heart and
circulation conditions. In such cases the Car-
dio-Pulse set (optional feature) is required.
U
Plug ear clip 30 (
)
into the bottom of the control pad
(Interface 35,
W
).
Then attach the ear clip to the ear lobe after
first rubbing the ear lobe to ensure there is
good circulation.
Attach the coiled cord to clothing using the
cable clip.
Cardio-Pulse set (optional feature)
The chest-band heart rate sensor (Cardio-
Pulse set) 31 measures the heart rate more
accurately and for that reason can be used to
monitor the pulse limit of patients with cardio-
vascular conditions (see page 56, „Pulse
limit").
To connect it to the THERA-vital, plug the
receiver connector into the socket on the
bottom of the control pad (Interface 35,
so that the flat side is facing towards the
patient.
46
Slightly moisten the inside of the chest-
band and strap it around the chest (close to
the heart) so that the transmitter is facing
towards the THERA-vital.
To prevent interference when sev-
eral THERA-vital exercisers are
being used with Cardio-Pulse
sets, there should be a gap of at
least 3 m between exercisers.
Correct functioning of the heart rate
monitor can be checked on the screen:
if a heart rate figure is indicated and the
heart symbol is at least partially col-
oured red, the signals from the heart
rate monitor are sufficiently strong and
regular. If the heart symbol is com-
pletely coloured red, the heart rate sig-
nals are of the optimum strength.
With an earlobe heart rate sensor, the
signal quality can fluctuate considera-
bly. The signal is dependent on the
blood circulation to the ear lobe and
how well the sensor is attached. Wob-
bling of the sensor will cause interfer-
ence signals and momentary breaks in
signal detection that can prevent dis-
play of a heart rate even though the
heart symbol is showing solid red.
If no heart rate signal is present, the
heart symbol is grey.
