8.1

Integration into a welding system

Welding systems equipped with the digital welding current source normally
consist of the following main components:
• higher-level weld timer
• digital welding current source (in MF design; MF: medium-frequency)
• suitable MF welding transformer with current sensor and
• pneumatically or electrically operated electrode gun and electrodes.
Furthermore, a higher-level controller is required that controls the entire
manufacturing process of the part and also monitors its safety aspects.
Suitable controllers include
• a programmable logic controller (PLC)
• a robot controller, or even
• a combination of these possibilities.

The weld timer must ensure the controlled performance of the actual
welding process.
For this purpose, it must provide open- and closed-loop control of many
functions and physical quantities.
Its main tasks include, e.g.:
• Communication with a higher-level PLC or robot controller via I/O signals.
• Controlling a proportionate control valve or a servo motor for influencing
the electrode force.
• Ensuring the proper schedule of various time intervals (e.g. squeeze,
weld, hold time etc.).
• Controlling the digital welding current source (specification of command
value characteristic).
