2.4 Charging the battery in installed state

We do not recommend charging the battery in the installed state. Acid
splashes during charging are unavoidable. The acid will attack the paintwork and
other components of the vehicle. When the battery connected to the vehicle, the
vehicle electronics may also be damaged. Observe the instructions of the vehicle
manufacturer. To do this, consult the operating instructions/maintenance manual
of the vehicle manufacturer. Make sure that the mains switch on the rear of the
device is set to OFF (see diagram) and the mains plug of the charger is not
connected to the socket. The power supply must be interrupted. Connect
the loose cable (cable with the red clamp) to the charger in accordance
with the voltage of the battery to be charged by the charger. To do this,
either remove the cap from the 12 or 24 Volt connection and slide the
cable shoe ring over the connection. Now screw the cap back into place.
Connect the red clamp plus cable to the plus pole (marked "+"" or "P") of
the battery. Now connect the black minus cable to an exposed section of
the chasses, as far as possible from the battery and the petrol line. Set the Charge/
Start switch to the battery icon to start charging. Switch the boost function of the
device on to quickly charge the battery or use the minimal (MIN) charging current to
charge the battery more gently, see diagram. Only at the end of the set-up process
do you plug the mains plug of the charger into the 230V mains socket and set the
main power switch of the device to ON. The device is now switched on and operating.
2.5 Charging current and duration
During the charging process, the ampere meter of the charger indicates the current charging current.
The charging current drops during the course of the charging process. When the charging current approaches zero, the battery is fully
charged. In order to prevent damage to battery caused by overcharging, the charging current of the battery must be constantly moni-
tored. The charging duration of the battery to be charged depends
on a number of factors, for example, the capacity of the battery,
the ambient temperature, the charge state and the performance
of the charger etc. The exact charged state of the battery can only
be determined with a battery acid tester (battery acid density
measuring device) which can be used to measure the specific
density of the electrolyte liquid. The following density values
apply (kg/l at 20 °C):
1.28 ≙ charged battery
1.21 ≙ half charged battery
1.14 ≙ discharged battery
It is very important to monitor the charging process at short intervals.
2.6 Ending the charging process
To end the charging process, switch the mains switch on the rear of the device to OFF and unplug the mains plug of the device from
the mains socket. Then, first remove the black minus clamp. The remove the red plus clamp from the plus pole of the battery. For
batteries that are not maintenance-free, check the liquid level of each individual battery cell and fill up to the maximum mark with
distilled water. Never use tap water. Then replace the cell caps firmly. Now remove any acid splashes from the surface of the battery.
To do this, use an old scrap of cloth that must subsequently be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. Careful, battery acid is
very corrosive. Use goggles and protective gloves. (See safety notes)
