CU-6DMX
Order number 38.6240
LED Controller / DMX Interface
GB
Please read these operating instructions carefully
prior to operating the unit and keep them for later
reference.
1 Applications
The 6-channel controller CU-6DMX serves to con-
trol together two LED strips with RGB LEDs which
require an operating voltage between 12 V and
24 V (e. g. LEDS-5/RGB from MONACOR). The
control programmes, the programme speed and
the brightness of the LEDs are adjusted via the
supplied IR remote control.
As an alternative, the CU-6DMX can also be used
as a DMX interface to control the brightness of
LED strips from a DMX light controller. For opera-
tion with DMX light controller two operating modes
can be selected:
– For control via 3 DMX channels, 2
colours can be controlled together (e. g. to
adjust the same brightness for two RGB LED
strips).
– For control via 6 DMX channels six colours can
be controlled separately (e. g. to adjust a differ-
ent brightness for two RGB LED strips or for up
to six LED strips of individual colours).

2 Safety Notes

The unit corresponds to all relevant directives of
the EU and is therefore marked with
WARNING
Please note that fast changes in
lighting and colour may trigger
epileptic seizures with photosensi-
tive persons or persons with
epilepsy!
G
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect
it against humidity and heat (admissible ambi-
ent temperature range 0 – 40 °C).
G
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth, never use
chemicals or water.
G
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability
for any resulting personal damage or material
damage will be accepted if the unit is used for
other purposes than originally intended, if it is
not correctly connected or operated, if it is over-
loaded, or not repaired in an expert way.
If the unit is to be put out of operation
definitively, take it to a local recycling
plant for a disposal which is not harmful
to the environment.

3 Connecting the LEDs
and the Power Supply Unit
Connect the LEDs for the output channels 1 to 3
to the left terminal strip OUTPUT (4) and the LEDs
for the output channels 4 to 6 to the right terminal

Important! Make sure that the CU-6DMX is not
overloaded by the LEDs: the load for each out-
put channel must not exceed 5 A, the total load
must not exceed 10 A.

For power supply use a regulated power supply
unit. Adjust the power supply unit to the operating
voltage of the LEDs (min. 12 V , max. 24 V ). It
must be able to deliver the current required for the
operation of the LEDs plus a supply current of
approx. 45 mA for the CU-6DMX. Connect the
power supply unit to the left or right pair of termi-
nals INPUT (3 or 5).

4 Operation with DMX Light Controller
4.1 DMX connection
For the DMX connection, 3-pole XLR connections
(2) are available:
Pin 1 = ground, pin 2 = DMX-, pin 3 = DMX+
For connection, special cables for high data flow
should be used. Standard microphone cables with
screening and a minimum cross section of 2 ×
0.22 mm

and with a capacity as low as possible
can only be recommended for a total cable length
of up to 100 m. For cable lengths exceeding 150 m
it is recommended to insert a DMX level matching
amplifier (e. g. SR-103DMX from "img Stage Line").
1) Connect the input DMX IN to the DMX output of
the light controller.
2) Connect the output DMX OUT to the DMX input
of the next CU-6DMX or the next DMX-con-
trolled unit. Connect its output again to the
input of the following unit etc., until all DMX
units are connected in a chain.
3) To prevent interference when transmitting sig-
nals, for long cables or for a great number of

units connected in series, the DMX output of
the last unit of the chain should be terminated
with a 120 Ω resistor (> 0.3 W): Connect a cor-
responding terminating plug (e. g. DLT-123
from "img Stage Line") to the output jack.
As an alternative to the XLR connections, the
RJ-45 connections (1) are provided which can be
used as a DMX input and DMX output respec-
tively (pin configuration
imprint on the unit).
4.2 Adjusting the operating mode
Via the switch No. 10 of the DIP switch block (8)
the unit can be adjusted to two different operating
modes.
For control via 3 DMX channels set the switch
No. 10 to the upper position:

For control via 6 DMX channels set the switch
No. 10 to the lower position:

4.3 Adjusting the start address
To control the CU-6DMX from a light controller,
adjust the DMX start address for its first DMX
channel. The following DMX channels are then
automatically assigned to the following addresses.
The start address is adjusted as a binary number
via the switches No. 1 to No. 9 of the DIP switch
block (8). A place value is assigned to each of the
switches according to the binary code. By addition
of the place values of the switches set to the upper
position, the start address will result.
Example: start address 5
Switches No. 3 and No. 1 in the upper
position (place values 4 + 1)
After adjusting the start address, switch on the
power supply for the CU-6DMX to set the unit into
operation. The LEDs connected can now be oper-
ated via the light controller. The reception of con-
trol signals via the DMX input is shown by lighting
of the LED "ON" (7).
