4.4 Cutting quality

There are various parameters and combinations thereof that affect the cutting quality: the Cutting
Tables section of the present manual indicates the optimum adjustments for cutting a given
material. Nonetheless, due to the inevitable differences due to installation on different
pantographs and variations in the specifications of the materials cut, the optimum parameters
may undergo small variations compared to those indicated in the aforementioned tables. The
points below may help the user make those small variations needed to achieve good quality
cutting.
As shown in the cutting tables, there are various sets of consumables based on the cutting current
and gas used.
If the priority is high productivity, thus high cutting speed, set the maximum permitted current
and the largest nozzle diameter. Vice-versa, if attention is focused on cutting quality (better
squaring and a narrower kerf), set the minimum current permitted for the material and thickness
in question.
Before making any adjustment, make sure that:
• the torch is perpendicular to the cutting surface
• electrode, nozzle, H2O nozzle holder and nozzle protection are not excessively worn,
and that their combination matches the job selected
• the cutting direction is correct for the shape to be produced. Remember that the best
side of a cut is always on the right from the direction the torch is moving (the plasma
swirl ring used has the holes arranged clockwise)
When cutting very thick material, special care must be taken during the first penetration: in
particular, try to remove the build-up of molten material around the initial cutting hole, to avoid
dual arc phenomena when the torch is brought back to the starting point. In addition, always
keep the nozzle protection clean of any molten metal waste that may stick to it.
