4.3.3 Water-cooling

Requirements of the cooling system:
Open cooling systems must not be used.
Only closed cooling systems may be installed, preferably with monitoring of the cooling
water quality.
The electrochemical processes occurring in a cooling system must be minimized by the
selection of materials. Mixed installations, that is the combination of different materials, such
as copper, brass, iron and halogenous plastics (PVC tubes and seals), must therefore be
avoided.
The material recommended for the pipework of a cooling system are stainless steels V2A or
V4A (NIROSTA Austenite) and electrically non-conductive pipes EPDM/NBR (EPDM on the
water-side). The potential equalization required between the components (motor, heat
exchanger, pipe system, pump etc.) in the cooling system must be a copper busbar or
copper conductor with an appropriate cross-section for preventing electrochemical
processes.

A pressure relief valve is required in the feed pipe.
Requirements of the cooling water:
The cooling water must permanently fulfill the following requirements:
- Chemically neutral reacting, clean, water cleansed from solid particles.
- Maximum grain size of any particles carried along < 0.1mm
- Conductance (water only) < 500 µS/cm
- pH value 6.0 to 8.0
- Chlorides < 40 ppm
- Sulphates < 50 ppm
- Dissolved substances < 340 ppm
- Water hardness < 170 ppm
- Use of a particle filter (100 µm).
Protective measures must be taken for operation, storage and transport if there is a risk of
frost, for example draining and blowing out the system with air, providing additional heating
etc.
Working pressures above the specified values are not permissible.
The motor cooling is made of material that is not resistant to sea water, therefore
it must not be directly cooled by sea water.
