Notes
For explosion-proof applications, the efficiency of the installed protection devices has to be verified prior to
commissioning!
The protection function of the device is the thermal overload protection of motors. In case of an overload trip, the motor
is switched off via the load contactor by opening the NC contact of the electronic overload relay.
The safe state is an open NC contact of the device used to control the motor contactor.
Mounting and commissioning
The overload relay may only be replaced by an equivalent device, marked in accordance with the regulations.
For applications protecting motors in potentially explosive areas, the device may only be used if it is configured for
"manual reset".
Setting the rated motor current is done using the adjusting knob on the front side.
For this purpose, the rated motor current has to be adjusted at the overload relay according to the
EC type examination certificate specification and/or the type plate.
When selecting the overload relay, check its suitability by means of the trip curves and/or the trip class. Decisive values are the
ratio between the motor startup current I

Prior to commissioning it is necessary to perform a self-test and to ensure protection against unauthorized modification (setting
for I
, trip class, Man/Auto reset) by sealing the cover.

The connecting cables have to be dimensioned according to the specifications and/or the applicable standards.
For heavy duty applications the correct cable sizes to prevent thermal overloads have to be selected.
Self-test
Testing according to EN 60079-17 is performed by means of a self-test (ST position).
The test has to be performed by skilled personnel familiar with the standard.
If the self-test fails, the device has to be replaced.
The self-test may only be repeated after waiting 30 min without motor current.
Conditions for self-test
The EF electronic overload relay must be connected to a symmetric load.
The motor current must be > 80% of the lowest adjustable current.
Procedure for self-test
Mark the adjusted motor current on the device (temporarily).
Start the motor and wait at least 5 minutes after the motor has started up.
Measure the current in one phase by means of a clamp-on ammeter (I > 80% of the lowest set current range).
Start the self-test by setting the Ie adjusting knob as fast as possible to "ST".
Measure the time until the NC contact (95, 96) of the overload relay opens by means of a stopwatch.
The measured trip time must meet the requirements according to the following table for the selected trip class.
