▶ Hold the saw firmly with both hands and position your arms to absorb kickback forces. Position
yourself off to one side of the blade, never bring the blade into line with your body. Kickback
can cause the saw to jump backwards, but by adopting suitable precautions the operator can control
kickback forces.
▶ If the saw blade binds or when you interrupt work for any reason, switch off the saw and hold it
motionless in the material until the saw blade comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove
the saw from the workpiece or pull the saw back while the blade is in motion, as otherwise the
saw could kick back. Investigate and take corrective action to eliminate the cause of the blade binding.
▶ When restarting a saw in the workpiece, center the saw blade in the kerf and check that saw
teeth are not in engagement with the workpiece. If the saw blade is jammed it can jerk up out of the
workpiece or cause a kickback when the saw is restarted.
▶ Support large panels to minimize the risk of blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag
under their own weight. Panels have to be supported on the left and the right, near the line of cut and
also close to both edges.
▶ Do not use dull or damaged blades. Saw blades with dull or incorrectly set teeth produce a narrow
kerf, causing excessive friction, blade binding and kickback.
▶ Tighten the blade-depth and blade-angle adjustment locking levers before you make the cut. If the
settings change while the saw is cutting the saw blade can bind, causing the saw to kick back.
▶ Use extra caution when sawing into walls or other blind areas. As it enters the material the blade
might encounter a hidden obstruction, resulting in kickback.
Function of the lower guard
▶ Before using the saw, always check that the lower guard closes correctly. Do not operate the saw
if the lower guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard to
hold it in the open position. Dropping the saw can bend the lower guard. Use the retracting lever to
raise the guard and make sure that it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part of the
saw at any cutting angle or depth of cut.
▶ Check operation of the spring for the lower guard. If the guard and spring are not in full working
order, have the saw serviced before use. Damaged parts, gummy deposits or a build-up of sawing
debris slow down the movement of the lower guard.
▶ Open the lower guard manually only for special cuts such as compound plunge-and-angle cuts.
Use the retracting lever to open the lower guard and release the lever as soon as the blade
starts to cut into the workpiece. For all other types of sawing work, allow the lower guard to operate
automatically.
▶ Do not lay the saw down on the workbench or on the floor unless the lower guard has closed and
is covering the blade. An unprotected blade still rotating as it runs down will propel the saw in the
direction opposite the cutting direction, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for
the blade to come to a complete stop after the switch has been released.
Function of the guard
▶ Before using the saw, always check that the guard closes correctly. Do not operate the saw if
the guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the guard to hold it in the
open position; this would leave the saw blade dangerously exposed. Dropping the saw can bend the
guard. Make sure that the guard moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part of the saw
at any cutting angle or depth of cut.
▶ Check the condition and operation of the spring for the guard. If the guard and spring are not in
full working order, have the saw serviced before use. Damaged parts, gummy deposits or a build-up
of sawing debris slow down the movement of the lower guard.
▶ When preparing to plunge cut at an angle off the perpendicular, secure the base plate of the saw
so that it cannot move sideways. Sideways movement can cause the saw blade to jam, leading to
kickback.
▶ Do not lay the saw down on the workbench or on the floor unless the guard has closed and is
covering the blade. An unprotected blade still rotating as it runs down will propel the saw in the direction
opposite the cutting direction, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade
to come to a complete stop after the switch has been released.
Function of the riving knife
▶ Use a saw blade of the correct thickness for the riving knife. For the riving knife to be effective, the
steel disc of the saw blade must be thinner than the riving knife and the saw blade teeth must be thicker
than the riving knife.
▶ Adjust the riving knife as described in these operating instructions. Incorrect thickness, positioning
and alignment can render the riving knife ineffective for preventing kickback.
