closely the effect of any change he/she makes in the module parameters, and watch
for any discontinuity or nonlinear functionality.
2.2 Setting of threshold currents
After setting initial stimulation parameters the system is ready for tuning.
Start with the left side (stimulation mode "BILAT").
Connect only left side energy transfer cable and coil.
1. Turn the "Threshold select" switch to "1". Combination number 1
is now active only.
2. Press the "LOCK" + "ON" keys of the stimulus controller to turn
it on.
3. Increase the corresponding threshold current gradually until first
slight but definite diaphragmatic twitches are observed (use visual
checking + palpation).
This threshold current value is recorded (Use a form shown
in Appendix 5 (Form 2)).
4. Set the corresponding TV switches to the same value.
Repeat steps 1 - 4 with the other combinations.
Disconnect energy transfer cable and coil from the left channel and reconnect with
the right channel.
Repeat steps 1 - 4 on the right side.
2.3 Adjustment of TV current of a single electrode combination
5. Again, start at the left side. Turn the "Threshold select" switch to
"5". Electrode combination number 1 is active only.
6. Increase TV current in small steps until maximal diaphragm
contraction and maximal tidal volume are achieved (use
respirometer, fluoroscopy or ultrasound).
7. Decrease TV current gradually until tidal volume (in litres) is
appropriate. A first choice for TV current is appr. 0,5 - 1 mA
above the threshold.
8. Record the current value found (Form 2) and turn the "Threshold
select" switch to the next combination.
